Norman Colin Dexter (Stamford, 29 September 19/30 – Oxford, 21 March 20/17) was a British writer, known for creating the character of Inspector Morse.

Dexter was one of the greatest British specialists in puzzles and especially crosswords, a skill that he often used in the complicated plots of his books and which he wanted to pass on to his investigator Endeavor Morse.
For his many published works, including novels and short stories characterized by the winning combination of irony and boundless literary and musical erudition, Dexter has received many awards and honors.

Dexter è stato uno dei massimi specialisti britannici di enigmistica e soprattutto di parole crociate, dote che utilizzò spesso nelle complicate trame dei suoi libri e che volle trasmettere al suo investigatore Endeavour Morse.
Per le molte opere pubblicate, tra cui novelle e racconti caratterizzati dalla combinazione vincente di ironia e smisurata erudizione letteraria e musicale, Dexter ha ricevuto molti premi e onoreficenze.
