I heard footsteps at the door and my heart thumped furiously.

"It's equally locked," someone said outside.

"Where could the bastard be?"

"Guys, let's go. He's marked for death already."

The noise of sirens wailing rented the air.

"Damn, they are playing tricks on us! Someone must have called those rats!"

Their hurrying steps sounded from loud to faint till nothing.

I wondered if Joe called the police because I called them just a few seconds ago. I slowly unshuttered the shutters. A few minutes later, I heard Joe's voice.
