The Lone Girl (Chapter: 2)
ENCOUNTER WITH EVA
The kids went rather swiftly since it was snowing heavily. I realized that it was getting late, so I sped as fast as I could and my mind was so lost in thoughts that I almost dashed into a tree. I reached Shelly’s house safely but I was for sure late.
Shelly was surprised to see me coming in so late. I explained to her about the Primewood kids' invitation and how hard it was to walk when it snowed at night. She grinned at me, “Well, I would love to go to the Primewood Gardens with you tomorrow, but I have a nasty cold.” I and she chatted for nearly for an hour and then she went inside the kitchen. She came back with a freshly baked chocolate cake, “I don’t think I can make it to the Christmas program so present them this cake on my behalf.” I told her that I would be glad to do so.
She carefully giftwrapped the cake in a box and handed it to me. I waved Shelly goodbye. I had to walk home in that biting cold. I was just about to get on the street when Shelly called me and told me that I could use her bike which was in the garage at the back of her house. She gave the keys to her bike. I, at first, hesitated but then I agreed to use her bike when she told me that I shouldn’t walk on a cold night and that I would fall sick. I went out and got the bike. The moment I saw the bike, I loved it. It was just my kind of bike, an absolute charm. I thanked Shelly, got on the bike, placed the box safely at the back and drove away. I never dared to increase the speed even though it was getting late.
It was so dark and the streets were densely covered in snow. I couldn’t see anything ahead and I was praying hard that I should be able to make it home safe and sound.
A few minutes later I noticed that the snowfall was gradually decreasing and I was glad about that. Just a few more minutes and I will be at the doorstep of my house.
As I was driving, I couldn’t help but contemplate the Primewood kids. But then something stopped my train of thoughts. As I looked around, I saw a girl, standing under a huge tree, all alone in the snow, looking at the moon and murmuring something. It kind of freaked me out, I realized that maybe she was so desperate for someone that she didn’t mind standing in this freezing cold or maybe she had lost her way and was asking the moon to get her back home. I was a little scared to go towards her but I felt sorry for her.
At this very moment, I was debating to myself. Should I go towards her and find out what’s wrong or should I just ignore her and get back home? She could be a psychopath. You never know.
After a few minutes, I decided to approach her and believe me, I was uncertain of this decision. Anyway mustering up courage, I parked my bike under a nearby tree and started walking towards her. She didn’t recognize that I was approaching her. She stood motionless staring into space. I supposed that she wasn’t alive.
I waved towards her, but, she wouldn’t take notice because she was completely lost in thought. I came up behind her and started whistling a tuneless note so she could become a little aware that there was someone behind her. But she didn’t seem to heed to that too. I assumed that maybe she was kind of deaf so I took her hand and shook it violently. She blinked her eyes speedily as though she had suddenly snapped out of a trance. She looked at me quite annoyed.
I could say that she was just about twelve or thirteen years old. She had a unfriendly look on her face. She wore a hoody so I guess she didn’t like to be noticed much. She looked at me hatefully, “Why on earth are you disturbing me?” I explained to her that I was a little concerned about her standing all alone in the snow and I asked her if she had lost her way home. She glared at me, “Well, no I am not lost. And even if I am, I wouldn’t require your help. Now just back off.” She nearly shoved me to the ground. I was quite shaken. She is pretty but certainly rebellious which I certainly don’t approve of. She just walked away and didn’t even apologize and that’s not good.
As she was walking, she suddenly stopped and turned towards me and started screaming at the top of her voice, “How could you even think of disturbing me? Well, nobody messes with Eva. Got it? I know that everyone wants to hurt me, but I will not tolerate it anymore. If you are trying to taunt me, then you are going to seriously regret it for the rest of your life! Take my word for it.”
As she said this, tears spilled from her blood-stricken eyes. She bit her lips with fury, turned her head and ran away as swift as tide. She disappeared into the far end of the street before I knew it.....
