🐢 Turtles have a multifunctional dermal shell covered in keratin, the same substance that makes up our hair and nails.
🐢 Turtles belong to the Testudines order and are very widespread reptiles almost everywhere, even in Italy.
Their shell is an extraordinary biological structure and represents an incredible bioengineering project that has enabled the success of these animals in terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems.
🐢The turtle shell consists of the dome-shaped dorsal carapace and the ventral plastron, connected by lateral "bridges".
The carapace and plastron are made up of ossified dermal tissue covered by 38 keratinized epidermal plates, called scutes, arranged in a mosaic.
The scutes are innervated and bleed if damaged, and are sensitive to touch.

shelter, camouflage, impermeability, buoyancy, thermoregulation, reserve of fat, minerals and water, and, above all, mechanical protection.

🐢Le tartarughe possiedono un guscio dermico multifunzionale ricoperto di cheratina, la stessa sostanza che costituisce i nostri capelli e unghie.
🐢Le tartarughe appartengono all'ordine Testudines e sono rettili molto diffusi un po’ ovunque, anche in Italia. Il loro guscio è una struttura biologica straordinaria e rappresenta un incredibile progetto di bioingegneria che ha permesso il successo di questi animali negli ecosistemi terrestri, d'acqua dolce e marini.
🐢Il guscio delle tartarughe è costituito dal carapace dorsale a forma di cupola e dal piastrone ventrale, collegati da “ponti” laterali.
Il carapace e il piastrone sono formati da tessuto dermico ossificato ricoperto da 38 placche epidermiche cheratinizzate, chiamate scuti, disposte a mosaico. Gli scuti sono innervati e sanguinano se danneggiati, e sono sensibili al tatto.
🐢Il guscio delle tartarughe è polifunzionale, cioè serve per:
il riparo, il mimetismo, l’impermeabilità, la galleggiabilità, la termoregolazione, la riserva di grasso, minerali e acqua, e, soprattutto, la protezione meccanica.
