In Khakranagla, a village in Rajasthan, after a girl has her first period, she has a ceremonial bath and then married. The first night is celebrated as the 'nath utrai' or losing of virginity.
Often, adolescent girls are initiated into the family 'tradition' of prostitution, while their brothers become 'agents'. They practice locally, on highways or in big cities such as Delhi and Mumbai as bar girls or in brothels. Marriage is rare for the girls, but once married, they aren't permitted to take clients.
