A solitary candle.
A SOLITARY CANDLE
I WAS RIDING THROUGH TOWN LATE ONE NIGHT
AND ON THE SOUTH SIDE I SAW A LIGHT
FLICKERING IN THE WINDOWS IN THIS OLD HOUSE
I WONDERED TO MYSELF WHAT IT MEANT
I DROVE ANOTHER FEW MILES AND MADE MY MIND UP
I WOULD RETURN AND KNOCK TO ASK
WHY IS THE CANDLE IN THE GLASS ?
IT'S ASKING FOR PRAYERS FOR MY MOTHER
WHO IS BATTLING CANCER
SHE STRUGGLES EACH DAY
SINCE THEY FOUND THE MASS
JUST ON THE EDGE OF HER BRAIN
A LITTLE SPOT IN THE CORNER OF HER EYE
THINKING IT WAS JUST A BITE
NOW SHE LAYS IN A BED
CAN BARELY MOVE HER OWN HEAD
SHE ASKED FOR THE CANDLE TO BE
PLACED IN EVERY WINDOW
THAT OTHERS COULD SEE
WHEN THEY PASS BY THIS OLD PLACE
SO EVERY NIGHT WHEN IT TURNS DARK
I LIGHT THE CANDLES AND SET THEM IN THE WINDOWS
WAITING AND HOPING SOME ONE WILL PRAY FOR HER
TO BE ABLE TO OVER COME THIS DANGER THAT LIVES WITHIN HER
IT'S BEEN A WEEK NO OTHER HAS EVEN BOTHERED
TO DROP IN TO SEE WHAT IS THE MATTER
SINCE THE DAY THE DOCTOR DISCOVERED
THAT SHE WAS DYING FROM BRAIN CANCER
YOUR THE FIRST TO STOP BY
AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW
WOULD YOU LIKE TO MEET HER
AND SAY A PRAYER TOGETHER,
I WANT KEEP YOU FOR LONG
JUST A PRAYER AND MAYBE A SONG
SOME THING TO BRING BACK SOME CHEER
IN THIS HOUSE FILLED WITH FEAR.
AS WE WALK ALONG THE HALL TO HER ROOM
I HEAR THE FINAL CRY FOR HELP
AS MY MOTHER PASSED ON FROM HERE
INTO THE WORLD OF PEACE AND HAPPINESS
I TURNED TO ASK THE STRANGER TO HELP
AND NO ONE WAS THERE
I LOOK OVER TO THAT SOLITARY CANDLE
AND ON THE OUT SIDE OF THE WINDOW PANE
I SAW A LONE ANGEL FLY AWAY
INT O THE SKY HE SAILED
WITH THE SPIRIT OF MY MOTHER
I KNEW RIGHT THEN AND THERE
GOD HAD ANSWERED HER PRAYERS
HE SENT AN ANGEL TO HELP HER HEAL
TEARS OF JOY, TEARS OF PAIN
FELL DOWN MY FACE
AS I STOOD THERE ALONE AND AFRAID
IN FRONT OF THE EMPTY WINDOW PANE
A SOLITARY CANDLE BURN OUT
BY THE WIND OF AN ANGEL WHO HELPED MY MOTHER
OUT.
