Ruse
My self was like stone, once
Like brass walls and bronze shields,
Until I learned, to let it down,
Show that self to the world.
The winds of change spoke true,
The seas roared a warning,
"Don't!"
I didn't listen.
You taught me to let my heart open,
To let you in, to trust you,
Like a besotted lover I looked to you,
Until I learned, that it was all a ruse.
You shattered the self I showed you,
Who I was, who I had been,
Before you took it away,
Leaving me stranded.
"Give it back!" my voice is a quiet growl,
"Give me back!" a wounded lion roars beneath,
Give it all back, what you took
What you stole, when you fooled me.
My self is gone now,
It lies like shattered shards of a mirror,
On the cobbled floor,
of these forgotten streets.
My eyes seemed dead, as I beheld myself
My hands limp against my side,
My hair matted and clawed at,
My self once whole, now not.
