we thought we were done.
it’s hard to believe
that this is the one

event that will take
you away from this life,
away from the pain,
away from the strife.

my heart aches
despite months of preparing.
i thought i was ready,
as we have been staring

at this abyss of death,
failing to claim you
because you are stubborn
and nothing can tame you.

i miss you and yet
you are not yet gone.
we are still waiting,
we cannot move on.

i wish you peace
if this is the final day.
may you find relief
as you fly away.
