Duplicity
I saw starry skies and depthless seas,
Sapphire blue eyes and windy cliffs,
Like a besotted fool, I gave you my hand,
Like a love possessed halfwit, I gave you all of me.
First it was lushy green and warm,
Like the first warm rays of summer,
You looked at me like I was your world,
Yet my soul tugged away, seeing something amiss.
Your smile lit my days like a lone candle,
Yet I felt something brew beneath,
I gave you all I had,
But you gave me not.
Then lightning flashed, thunder rumbled,
A storm began to blow, leaving me to ponder.
The illusion was broke, so I was,
The mirror saw my soul and weeped.
You pulled the rug out from under me,
Then I saw you for who you were.
Life was over, it seemed,
For you held my lifeline in your hand.
You broke me into smithereens,
Crushed me like dirt under your shoe,
You never looked at me again,
For I was but a shadow of who I was... before you.
