A Heart
A heart is a precious thing
It beats to the rhythm of life
It brings great joy and great distraught
It pumps passion through wilted veins

To have of your own...

Opened up;
Would bring joy,
But only through suffering and dismay

Closed;
Would lead to regret
Less painful, but everlasting

To take hold of another's
Is to caress a feeble child,
One whose eyes have seen
What you could not imagine,
One who has crawled from a gutter
In a foreign time and place,
One whose soul in alive
With dreams and beliefs unknown,
One who deserves not your pain
For taking their heart with greed,

A heart is too precious to beat for lust
It beats not to want, but to give
Not to be fulfilled, but to bring joy
Not to be pleased, but to be patient
So pure and feeble
Meant for far more than frayful desire
But for peaceful foundation
And such a wondrous sight
A sight of nourishing trust
Of a partnership beyond compare
No matter the wait or toil
The anger and fury aroused,
But calmed at the sound
Of a voice, of a glance
The hurt not worth
The value in them

A heart is a precious thing
Both to have of your own
And to take hold of another's
For if either should fall
Both will shatter
