Releasing the Roll
Dressed in their finest,
They wait impatiently,
Lined up against
the palace wall.
A roar rises
as the official emerges,
Carrying a scroll
in hand.
Slowly he walks,
Almost somberly,
Ignoring the men
who snap at his heels
like rabid dogs.
With a flourish,
He unfurls the paper
before pinning it up
for all to see.

They gather 'round,
A swarm of locusts,
To see if they've made
the cut.
Hard to read
the many expressions
in such a queue as this.
