Onam,soul festival of kerala
also the season of harvest,
Story behind it is interesting
and lesson binding.

Kerala was once ruled
by a powerful and devoted king
called Mahaballi,under his reign
prosperity reached pinnacle
no trace of crime,misery or
poverty cast its spell.

Mahaballi, a true devotee of
God vishnu was blessed and loved
with high regards by his people.
Looking at his success gods of
heaven got jealous. They requested
Vishnu to let him not take over
the seats of heaven.

Vishnu and his illusions of play
did justice to both the gods and
Mahaballi.Vishnu approached
Mahaballi disguised as
Vamana,the holy Brahmin.
Mahaballi said "what can I
offer you,I have land,cow,animals
3worlds,the earth,the heaven and
the Underworld "

Vamana slyly replied" one shouldn't
desire for more than one needs,so
his needs were only three steps of land
Mahaballi agreed with generosity.
Vamana Grew in gigantic proportion.

first step he put on the heavens
then with his second step he acquired earth,
third step he let Mahaballi decide,
Mahaballi realized he is no ordinary
his God is infront of him,
so he offered his head Vamana to
step on his head,by doing so
Mahaballi owned underworld now.

Upon seeing the devotion and
justice of his Devotee,Mahaballi.
God Vishnu gave the boon to
Mahaballi to visit the earth only
once in a year,when harvest will
fully spring and people will
welcome him with love and
offerings of delicacies, hence the
day of arrival of Mahaballi is Onam.
