The rift between scent and memory
To me, some scents are so calm and soothing
I don't know exactly why
Like being in an ocean and slowly moving
Calming and sweet, like a gentle lullaby
Woodsmoke, a pleasant haze
I could smell it, for days and days
The pleasant sound of a fire's crackle
The warmth of it reminds me of a comfy shackle
Fire that looks about the color of gold
Fire that kept me warm back when I was cold
A scent of chlorine, a childhood scene,
The pool's a place where I was always carefree,
Although I never learned how to swim
The water made the sunshine above seem so dim
I still remember calmly dipping my head under water for a moment
And then the fear that I'd drown, sudden and potent
A scent can bring us back in time,
To memories either joyous or maybe even sublime,
A simple smell, can evoke strong emotions
Some might be small, some big and potent
Isn't it amazing how our senses can bring us
Back to moments we thought were left in the dust?
