Coming Home
Between the branches of a willow tree
framed by a panoramic mountain view
stands an old tatty wooden cabin
that I painstakingly built for you.

I made new shutters for the windows
mended the hinges on the door
we slept by the open roaring fire
on straw filled mattresses on the floor.

We would fish by the babbling brook
during long hot summer days
shelter from the thunder storms
when the clouds turned different greys.

We decided to start a family here
instead of the hustle and bustle of town
we would sit on the broken veranda
watching the summer sun go down.

Remember the first time we made love
it was under the moon and stars
you were so shy and body conscious
thinking I'd be put off by all your scars.

But these are what made you stronger
then you showed them off day to day
that's what made me fall in love with you
and I wouldn't of wanted it any other way.

I've travelled on lifes highways
but the journey will soon come to an end
for I shall reach your final destination
It's appearing just around the next bend.

Just past our old wooden cabin
is that small rundown family church
and that's where I'll lay your coffin
underneath a beautiful silver birch.

The children are standing here with me
they're silent and trying not to cry
our youngest daughter has just asked me
" Daddy, Why do love ones have to die"?
