Alice Dickinson
Alice Dickinson
••••••••••••••••••••

I stood upright in dilemma ;

But the maiden said ,

"My dear , you are

And will forever be

What you are

For long time since .

But I must go

And seek my way

To change myself ,

To fantacise not , but

To choose a life

That I expect .

And I think you

Should remember that ,

For long silence can

Make the heavens fall ."

Alice Dickinson

Spake these words to me ,

And when Dr Brown

Had come to the class —

She sat beside me .

It was her maiden bower

That I felt intense —

More than Tennyson

Or Arthur Hallam's essence .

Her eyes were fixed on

The pages of the book ;

But deep down in my

Heart I knew —

She never read Tennyson ,

Or listened to at what

Dr Brown did say .

And instead she

Looked at me

With dark grave eyes .

I felt I should talk

Abundant to her ,

But could not utter

What I meant to speak !

Alice Dickinson ,

The girl so meek —

I could cast a spell

But only dreamt to speak !

Then she looked again

In such a dream-view ,

That I could love her

And adore her bashful hue !
