The Circus Performer
I travel from land to land,
Just to give you joy.
To see you happy and lively,
Is all I ever want.

I've dedicated my life for this,
So I could give you my art.
To see your disbelief at me,
Is something I will never give up.

When I watch the tent go up,
I know in going to succeed,
At beginning another childhood dream,
Which will perhaps succeed.

You may think my act is my art,
But really it's just a guise.
For my true art,
Is making others happy.

When I see a young infant,
And hear their squeals of joy,
I'm reminded that I do this,
Just to bring them joy.

When I see an indifferent teen,
Cover their mouth due to fear,
I'm reminded of the danger,
Of all the acts we complete.

When I see a young couple,
Cradle each other in the audience,
I'm reminded of the memories I make,
That last entire lifetimes.

When I see a grandparent,
Point out something to a child,
I can see their age decrease,
And their eyes match that if the child's.

Sometimes I'm a contortionist,
Sometimes a juggler,
Or perhaps an aerialist,
But I will always be a star for you.

I love the silence of the room,
When the trapeze flys.
I love the laughter in the room,
When the clown falls over.

In the big top everyone is the same,
Awash with disbelief and wonder,
And intently watching the show,
As if they were only four.

When the show ends,
I listen to the excited chatter,
I watch the children try a trick they saw,
I watch dreams become real.
