Anguish made you cold
Terror make you numb
Hate fills your body
Where did it come from?

I feared you as a child
It wasn’t all your fault
A wound was made and bled
Our family poured the salt

You lashed out in anger
I couldn’t find out why
I hated you more each day
You didn’t have to try

Success was not an option
A triumph stomped to dirt
They set you up to fail and fail
And you were full of hurt

A split lip from a fathers hand
A sneer from his wife
You only tried to survive
You were fighting for your life

They spoke their thoughts through me
Like my mouth was a megaphone
They lifted me above the crowd
They placed me on a throne

I did not ask for this seat
I do not want it now
I just want to say I’m sorry
And fill the gap somehow

Still scared, untrusting and afraid
I see they’ve taught me well
But I see behind the curtain now
I’ve lifted up the veil

You have no reason to trust me
I’m not asking you to forgive
I just want to say that I see you
I now see the life they made you live.
