Abandoned
And there I was,
Between the dumpsters on the
Corner of the street, wrapped in a
Dirty cloth, crying for
Everyone to hear, but they ignored me.
Fate had dealt me a cruel hand,
Getting born into a world where I was
Hated and rejected by my own.
I was a burden, a curse, a shame,
Just because I was a girl-
Kicked and thrown away like trash,
Left to die by the ones who gave me birth.
Maybe someone would find me and take me home.
No, that was a foolish hope;
Only the dogs and crows came near,
Prowling and pecking at my fragile flesh,
Quenching their thirst with my blood,
Ripping my life away bit by bit.
Soon, I would be no more.
The world would not miss me.
Unwanted and unloved, I would
Vanish without a name or a grave.
What was my fault, I wondered?
X-chromosome was not my choice,
Yet I was punished for it,
Zapped of my right to live.

According to a report by the United Nations, India has the highest number of missing women due to sex-selective abortions and female infanticide.
