second chances
As I sat in a field of flowers,
Plucking petal by petal
Hoping just one would land on "loves me"
I heard the wind call my name.
My skin tickled with curiosity
My stomach fluttered and danced
To what did I owe this visit?
For I was just a girl with no chance.
"Show me where it hurts."
Said the wind, into my buzzing ears
Gently I tapped in the center of my chest
Treating it like frail glass
I said no words, but only sat still
Feeling myself sink into the nothingness of lore
"What have you done with your heart?"
I paused for a moment, lip trembling slightly
I couldn't shake the grief that gripped me so tightly.
I knew what it was, that I had done so very wrong
"I loved them so much, that I forgot to love myself".
It was to them I gave my heart,
To repair their torn, broken one
It was to them I gave my light,
To guide them out of the their own hell
It was to them I gave my everything,
To help them see the magic of being alive
Oh, did they take.
With filthy, desperate hands
The wind wrapped around me, and quietly said
"I love you. I love you. I love you."
When my eyes opened, it was just I.
Arms around myself, swaying back and fourth
Finally, I had found it.
The strength to love myself again.
