Morana (Marzanna)
I spend more time with her along the Rideau River
Than my ancestors did by the Adriatic Sea
Her chill penetrates our bones
Her frost inhabits our homes

For months, I get to know her
Although no one here knows her by name
Morana - Goddess of cold, frost, winter, and death
Sketched upon the frozen vapour of my breath

Winter's old crone, drowned or set upon a pire
To be replaced by Spring's eternal youth
She is woven into every new wrinkle upon my face
Each hibernal solstice imbues me with her grace

I recognize the wisdom in her darkness
As inevitable as the snow's descent after her storm
Why should I set her on fire to keep myself warm?
