A minute with the devil
The day was bad
But the night was worse
I could not stand
Another minute on earth

So the devil came to me
To provide a lesson
He asked for some time
So I gave him sixty seconds

From a shadow
There appeared a violin
"Are you here to cheer me,
Or to collect my sins?

I'm in no mood
For your devilish tricks
I want nothing from you
And I've no need to be rich"

"You needn't feel joy,
You're right to feel sorrow.
For the night is dark
And there may be no morrow.

"There's no trick?
No rhyme, no riddle?
It's only you?
You with your fiddle?"

"Yes."
He raised his bow
And lowered his chin
I sat in confusion
And watched him begin

It was beautiful
He expressed my pain
Each stroke sounded
Like a droplet of rain

Falling from my face
The louder I wept,
The more he played
But as soon as he left,

"Do not leave,
No, not yet!
Play some more and
Have my soul to bet!"

"Yes, I may be the devil,
But even I'm not that cruel
You gave me just a minute,
And so that was my rule."

The day I met the devil
Was the day that I cried,
He showed me something new
It was the value of my life
