Why do we miss things
that were never good for us?
Is it because
we try to only think
of the times that brought us laughter?
Of the times when it was easy?
Is it because
we try to ignore the times
when it caused us nothing
but heartache?

There is a familiar ache in my chest
I feel as though
it's been a long time
since I felt this way
missing the past
and how it held the love
we had
for one another
how it holds our laughter
as an echo in our heads
how it holds our smiles
suspended in time
in those wonderful moments

But it's gone now
and I can't let myself cling to the past
I miss it though
I miss how life used to be
but now there is only
a familiar heartache
