A Dog's Plea
The atmosphere was a cacophony of noise and heat,
As I sat on all fours in this cage,
In the company of five mates,
I wondered how i erred
We were all pets
Loving local pets with masters,
My master, though caring and kind
Gave me no reason to have forseen this.

The whimpering of my mates,
The realization that I couldn't move around,
Jolted me back to reality
I was no longer a pet,
But a caged prey,
Hunger gnawed on my stomach walls,
Reminding me of my last good meal of garri.

As the sun smiled crazily at us,
The whimpering of my mates subsided,
We battled with thirst, fear and hunger
Making us wonder if she was happy at our plight,
Or furious for a reason.
Mates seemed to have given up,
With freedom as our ultimate goal,
My whimpering kept on,
An honest plea for help.

Everyone that passed us
Seemed deaf to our pleas,
Like it was a normal sight for them,
Then came this young lady who stopped,
From her countenance,
I knew she'd be different from others.
I whimpered, she mimicked and chuckled,
I was in no mood for play,
I was talking to her but she understood nothing,
But she understood our sadness,
She'd disappointed me too
Sadly, I turned away from her stare,
She could do nothing.

The smoky aroma of meat,
Sent a quick message to us,
One of us had gone in earlier,
His roasted skin filling our nostrils,
Prepared us for our turn,
But while we await our deaths,
Help us quench our thirst,
Give us one free movement,
As my wishes returned to me,
I wondered why man called me his friend,
Only to hand me to my eaters,
Oh,dog eaters how I hate you!
