And Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep
In amongst these meadow flowers
each long stem bent in tired labour
I lay in the Summer sun for hours
as all the sights and sounds I savour.

The ladybirds and crawling critters
climbing near and far in constancy
the meandering bees and leaf sitters
flying in freedom beyond eyes can see.

Dragonflies flit exhausting to view
feed on midges in dazzling displays
now and then butterflies pass through
chased by the breeze in heatwave haze.

Pretty petals open rejoice in splendour
welcoming the pollinators one and all
the scent alluring, silent market vendor
attracting attention to an aromatic call.

And the crows in the trees stay in shade
watching the smaller taking centre stage
hedge sparrows and pigeons have it made
stealing berries and seeds ripened in age.

Tractors lay dormant, hay bales piled
cattle in dappled darkness are resting
here in the fields as a once playful child
I recall such pleasures seeing birds nesting.

Time has come round and I'm now ready
take me to the earth, the soil of my home
my breathing is shallow and I feel heady
as I lay still, surrender will, onwards roam.

Whiteness take me like clouds in the sky
I journey on a flight of my own at last
enveloped in Nature I surrender a last sigh
to visit new endless paths and fields so vast.
