THE CORONER'S VERDICT
At the coroner's inquest
The corpse before him was laid
Bare and unwashed on the white table,
That the remains of the deceased
--Though replete with puzzles--
Might officially be examined,
And afterwards put to rest
With the culprit brought to justice.

But there the coroner for hours
Sat staring at the guest in the room,
With nothing more to conjure save
Love, heartbreaks, folly, anguish,
Happiness, envy, smiles, fears,
Innocence, worries, adventures,
--All expressed on the pretty face--
And cause of death he concluded, "Life"!

"What if every breath is actually
a dose of asphyxia leading us into
a final state of what we call 'death'?...
Then Life is the killer, and it kills us all!"
