Son of the Soil
(for Sir Milton Margai, 1895 to 1964)

From a little village in Moyamba
he came, Gbangbatoke.
A man of a nobler character
whose love for Sierra Leone
led me to take the front line.

A leader who had the nation at heart,
He loved Sierra Leone with passion.
First prime minister of our mother,
First head of state of our river,
He wanted the best for us all.

Moderate and tolerant in all.
He was a puppy, very civil.
A guru in politics,
He fought for this great land
and left us far from the quicksand.

His reign was graced with prosperity
and harmony, he made us his duty.
Education was his priority,
Everyone mattered to him even
the blind, he gave them a home.

A fine gentleman,
Lives he wanted to save,
Many lives he saved.
If only we have leaders like him
the crown would have never fallen.
