The Old Treasure Chest
#WritcoStoryChallenge
The old, treasure chest lay exposed when the storm retreated. Davey and Scotty, were exploring a fairly deep cave when Scotty stumbled upon the treasure chest. "Wow check this out Davey!" "What you got Scotty?" "A Treasure chest! I wonder how old it is? And, where did it come from?" "Maybe it's pirates treasure!" Davey said. :Help me lift it Davey." The two boys pulled and pushed and dug out around it. but it didn't budge. They sat back. "This thing is stuck! How do we get it out Scotty?" ""Well, we have to keep digging but there isn't much sense right now." "Why?" "Because the tide is coming in. It's going to fill in everything we dug out already!" Then, Scotty got an idea. "Davey collect all the seaweed you can find, I'll do the same." "Seaweed" "Never mind, just hurry before the water reaches the Treasure Chest!" So the boys collected a massive amount of seaweed."Ok that's enough, Davey help me pack this seaweed around the box where we already dug it out." "Oh what a great idea!" "Pack it tight. Squish it right down in there. The more seaweed the less sand, I hope " Scotty said. "Davey run out to my bike and bring in that rope I threw on my bike this morning, will you please." "Sure, why?" "Water is a very powerful force of nature. Now that we've done some digging around the box I just don't want the water lifting it and carrying it away." "Ok be right back." Scotty pushed some more seaweed around the chest until he could pack no more. Davey came running in with the rope and a piece of tarp he had found. The two boys unwound the rope and tied it around the treasure chest. Then, they ran it to a nearby rock that jutted up and wrapped it twice around that and tied it tight! Then, Scotty picked up the piece of tarp Davey brought back and walked over to the chest. He spread it over the chest and discovered it was just big enough to cover the chest and the seawead. Davey could see what Scotty had in mind and he started digging a trench around the chest. Scotty went behind him pushing the tarp in the trench and buried it. It didn't take long to complete. It was a good thing because they were now standing in water. Scotty grabbed Davey and started running through the water towards the mouth of the cave. Davy started tugging against Scotty and Scotty stopped and looked back at his best friend. "What's wrong Davey?" The water it's getting deep Scotty." "Were almost out. I wont let go I promise Davey! But, we do have to hurry and do it now buddy. Come on!" With that, Scotty pulled his friend along and they made it to the mouth of the cave. Scotty never let go of his friend as they climbed up on a rock. He pulled Davey up behind him. They were both out of the water. Together, the boys climbed up higher on the rocks and found a flat rock to sit on. The sun felt good to the boys. They shucked off their shirts and wrung them out over the edge of the rock. Then they laid them out to dry. Scotty untied his boots. "What ya doing Scotty?" "I figured I'd ring out my socks and see if my boots will dry a bit. I don't have another pair of boots." "Scotty, if we have found burried treasure we might have enough to buy our families what they need!" " "I hope so. Well, my shirt is dry and so are my socks. My boots on the other hand are still pretty soggy." "Mine are too," Davy said. "I think I'll throw on my shirt and just hang my boots around my neck." Scotty said to Davey. "Come over to my house first thing in the morning so we can get an early start." "Ok Davey!" "See ya then Scotty!"
The next morning Davey was at Scotty's bright and early. Scotty opened the door and let him in. "Just in time for breakfast Davey," Scotty's mom Sandy said. Davy blushed, "Yes mom," as usual the boy admitted. The boys were so close they called each others' parents mom and dad. "I thought you would be back for supper last night until I saw how wet Scotty was." "Sorry mom," Scotty said. "Oh honey, I wasn't upset with you, but your boots are still wet this morning." Davey said, "well, I have a solution for the boots." Scotty and his mom looked at Davy. "I tried my boots on and these ones are a bit to small for me. I've never even worn these boots and your feet are a little smaller than mine." "Ya, well you're big foot!" Scotty playfully said to his friend. "Well here," Davey said, "Try these on. I can't get my big toe in them so they ought to fit you." The boys laughed and Scotty tried on the work boots. They fit him perfectly and with a bit of grow room. "Gee ," Scotty said, "these are great!" Scotty's mom came over, scooched down and felt where his toes were and the width of the boots. She said, "with some room to grow, but not to much that your foot will slide around. Well, Davey that's great! Thank you honey. Scotty keep these ones dry!" "Oh yes mom I will! Davey thank you! These are great!" "You're welcome Scotty. I'm glad they fit." "All right boys breakfast is served!" There were eggs, ham and toast, with some...
