MY REAL GHETTO STORY (5)
... continued from 4

Right in the hospital bed, two things happened. A good samaritan was at my beck and call though she was a total stranger. At infancy, I use to hear of fairytale where angels visit the needy in disguise. I was beginning to feel Angelica was my own version because she was always there and was willing to provide all I needed to heal fast.

On the other side, my boss manages to learn about my situation, so he traces me to the hospital where I was convalescing. Immediately he gained access to my ward, it was as if a blame dam was opened.

"If you had listen to me, this wouldn't have happened... It is this stubbornness that I detest so much in you. I hope you'd learn your lessons when you're finally out of here", echoed my vexed boss.

Why is he so mad? Is it for the concern he has for my well-being or is he trying to prove a point that the boss is always right? Well, it was a little bit soothing when he concluded by saying" I'll foot the bill".

Days pass...

My family finally traces me to the hospital. It was my younger brother that arrived. My mother I learnt collapsed on hearing the news of my involvement in a crash. "Don't worry, she is getting better now and will come and visit you once she fully recovers" says my brother. I learnt the land I was on my way to rescue from being confiscated had already been taken by my powerful uncles so my efforts was literally defeated.

Meanwhile, Angelica the good samaritan returns after work to inform me that the doctor has informed her that I am due for discharge the following weekend. She also informs me that she has contracted a physiotherapist who'll take care of the fractured bone I suffered in my left shoulder and right knee as a result of the accident. She wants me also to stay at her place so she can monitor my status before I finally leave (as if I even have anywhere to go). But one thing still puzzles me. Who exactly is this good samaritan? Angelica is a personification of kindheartedness. Aside the fact that she's so beautiful, she's also very humble... I learnt she isn't married😤... But a woman with such godly qualities deserves to be happy and have her own family... Well, I am not God; do they not say His time is the best?

Time tickles and the weekend arrives...

It is time for my discharge. But I cannot leave without paying the total accumulated bill of one hundred and eighty thousand naira. No panic...I already had an assurance from my boss so I should just give him a call. Well, an attempt to reach my oga earned me another three days in the hospital. He wasn't answering his phone.

Finally, he picks...

Me: good morning boss, it's me Ntemuse.

Boss: Nda what is the problem?

Me: I'm due for discharge sir and they're asking for the bill. It's actually one hundred and eighty thousand naira sir.

Boss: what? Why is it that much? Ok... I'll get back to you.

My boss never got back to me. How do I believe he actually let me down when I needed him most?!

In order for me not to continue staying in the hospital, godsent Angelica had to sell her laptop just to complete the hospital bill. She paid for me and secured my discharge, took me to her place for proper care. It was when I got there that I realised she is a Cross Riverian (Akpabuyo to be precise) who works with the Nigerian Road safety corps. She was actually driving pass the accident scene when she saw my unconscious body and decided to render help.

Well, I am grateful to Angelica, my family are too. I am now determined to pay her back in whatever form. I could even marry her...I have always wished to marry a good woman with a kind heart. Those sweet Calabar pet names: 'kokoette', 'ediye', 'etemma' etc are also good spices for me. I am now in love with my life saver and I want to work hard to make her happy. Though I'm yet to tell her about how I feel, I already know right within me that she won't turn me down after all, she tells me she's fond of me...she also says I'm intelligent and smart. I might be her kind of man.

Weeks gone...

Angelica helps me to hunt for a job. She goes everywhere with my curriculum vitae and photocopies of my credentials. Before now, she gives me money for upkeep and never complains. I am beginning to see her as my EVERYTHING. Myself and Angelica have already started planning our future untill an unimaginable happened.

I visited a certain firm who had invited me for an interview through the recommendation of Angelica's colleague. After the whole exercise, I decide to visit a nearby pub for some beer. As I approach the bartender to place an order, I feel a soft hand tapping me from the back. As I turn, it is someone I had least expected to see.

Margaret! I screamed... What are you doing here?

Margaret: Where have you been? I have looked for you everywhere. I am glad that I have finally found you. My dad wants to see you... Please, come for your son.
She hands me her call card and off she goes.

Another crossroads...how do I handle this? I can't hurt Angelica, but I need to have my son (whom I did not even know I had).

Who do you think Margaret is?
