Ashley and Machop charges out of the Pokémon Center in the early morning, ready to challenge the Dewford Gym.

Upon arriving at the door to the Gym, Ashley knocks on it and sees a man holding a surfboard.

Ashley says that she is looking to challenge the Gym Leader, and the man introduces himself as Brawly, the Dewford Gym Leader.

Brawly then agrees to a 2-on-2 match with Ashley.

Ashley sends out Taillow as her first Pokémon and Brawly counters with Machop.

Max checks his Pokédex and is startled to learn of Machop's strength.

Ashley tells Taillow to use Wing Attack, hitting Machop.

Ashley has Taillow use several Wing Attacks, all of them hitting Machop.

Ashley wonders how Machop can still look so strong after getting hit so many times.

Max says that Machop is absorbing the blows so Ashley has Taillow use Quick Attack.

Brawly finally orders a move, Cross Chop, hitting Taillow square on and knocking it out.

Next Ashley sends out Torchic, which knocks out Machop.

Ashley had caught a Torchic in the wild.

She also caught another one of Hoenn's first partner Pokémon, Mudkip.

Brawly then releases Makuhita against the already tiring Torchic.

Ashley scans Makuhita with her Pokédex.

Just when it seems like Torchic wouldn't give up, he suddenly evolves into a Combusken and finishes off Makuhita with a Shadow Claw.

The referee officially calls the match, announcing that Ashley is the victor. Brawly commends Ashley on her battle before awarding her with the Knuckle Badge.

Ashley and her friend set out once again for their next destination.
