Her Own Hero (Chapter 7)
"Hurry up ladies", yelled Coach Andy as the whole team began to climb into the bus. Mel moved ti the back of the crowd, wanting the backseat all to herself. "Move move move", he yelled even lowder. The girls finally squeezed in and Mel rushed to the back of the bus. By the time she got there though, there were three girls squeezed together, starting at one another's phones. "Eww, don't look at that picture, I took it as a joke", screamed Amy at Lauren. They were all wearing their red and white uniforms. Mel sighed and moved to a seat in pretty close to the back. Since no one else sat across from her, she picked up her legs, and put them on top. She opened the small bag she had brought which was filked with deodorant, two water bottles, a small towel and her pencil and journal. "I hope I don't get car sick", said Mel to herself, knowing there was no one watching, then she opened her notebook and wrote her imagination.
The people in the building start to run out the doors, not even looking to help the girl that juwt saved them. "Someone help", she screamed at the top of her lungs. She started to lose more and more blood. "Someone please", she screamed again, feeling dizzy. "Someone please he-". Then the light turned into darkness.
"We're here", Mel heard one of the girls say nervously. They all stood up and started pushing each other to get off the bus. Mel just waited for everyone else to pass, not wanting to get lost in the chaos. "Thank you", she said to the bus driver right before getting off the bus. "You are very welcome", the bus driver smiled. "Whoa, this school is so frickin huge", said Rayah in amusement. "Ladies, welcome to Nelson Middle School".
They got to the gym onlybto find about four girls shooting layups. Mel noticed that they were wearing orange and black uniforms. 7, 1, 31 and 11, those were their numbers. "Look, she's number 11 too", whispered Bella as she pointed at her jersey and then to the other girl's. The fout girls stared at them as thew walked down the court. "At what time does the game start", asked a blonde girl Mel still didn't know the name of. "9:30, it's 8:45, so in 45 minutes. Parents will be walking in at about 9:15 though", answered Coach. "We're going to do some drills while we wait", he crossed is arms and smiled. Everyone booed. "Fine, shoot around for ten minutes then we'll do drills". Everyone cheered, the girls on the other side of the court stared at them.
It was 9:20, just ten more minutes and rhe game of their lives eould start. "Ok, for these last ten minutes, we'll be playing knock-out, try not to get too tired", laughed coach, everyone just stared at him, not knowing what the heck he was laughing at. Mel got in the back of the line, she turned to see what the other team was doing. They were doing shooting drills. Now that more girls had arrived, Mel saw new numbers. 52, 27, 9, 13, 5, 2 and 14. Mel grinned, and looked at her jersey, they had a number 14 too. "Mel, catch", someone threw a basketball at her, but Me was too slow, the ball whacked her right in the head.
"Are you ok", asked Amy while laughing hysterically. "Yeah", she said quietly, trying to avoid the stares she was receiving. At least her parents couldn't come. Her dad would probably stand up on jis own two feet and yell, "Nice catch sweetie".
Before they knew it the game was about to start. The whole team was huddled together, discussing their strategy. "Ok we're gonna start off with Amy, Bella, Rayah, Lauren and Mel. You guys are going to start off with man-to-man for defense and five out for offense", they all nodded in agreement. "Rayah, remember, if you think we should change offense or defense, just huddle up the team real quickly, or just yell the code name", he said to his favorite player. "K coach", she responded. "Mel, you're starting us off at the middle like always". She nodded. "Ok ladies, lets get out there and have some fun", he put his right hand out. The team all brought their hands in. "Go Bears", they yelled together. Then they were off.
Mel walked to the center of the court, trying to take deep breaths. When she got tk the center, she faced a brown-haired girl who was basically twenty times taller than her. She wore a number 27 on her jersey. The referee blew his whistle and carried the ball to the center of the court. He out it between the two girls. "All you have to do is not mess up", Mel thought. Then, he threw the ball into the aie and both girls jumped as high as they possibly could to reach it, the game had begun.
