Enemies... or is it?
Ember and Scarlet have been enemies for months. They hate each other's guts. Ember is a secret agent who takes down villains. Scarlet is the smartest scariest villain on the entire continent. This is their origin and the beginning of the loathing.
~Scarlet's POV~
One of my minions seem a little dubious and she has for days. She keeps following me everywhere I go, despite her orders to work on the complete other side of the factory. I've been giving her really crappy jobs on purpose in the hopes that she'll learn her lesson. Today I decide I'll follow her around the factory to make sure she does what she's told.
"Amber would you be a dear and put that box into the transport truck?"
"Yes ma'am," she answers me and does as she's told for once.
"Amber please clean this disgusting stain on the floor," I demand.
"Yes ma'am."
The entire day she follows my orders so I decide that come tommorow I'll take it easy on her.
~Ember's POV~
I worry Scarlet might be onto me. Why else would she follow me around? My cover is blown, but I can't give up yet. I don't know her next evil plan and there's a chance she doesn't know. I am one of the best spies in my league.
The next day is a lot less stressful for my role, however I flinch at every single tap on the floor, just waiting for her to find out. She walks over to me and I mentally prepare myself to battle.
"Hi Amber," she says to me.
"Oh, hi boss," I reply.
"I just wanted to say good job on doing what you were supposed to yesterday. Also thanks for following my orders while I was right by you. Maybe you could follow orders more often so I don't have to stand next to you while you work?"
"Yes ma'am I'll try."
"Good. Since that's that I'm going to check on the other minions. Remember just do what I tell you and we're good, Amber." She walks away and I take a big breath of air.
Scarlet still keeps an eye on me all the time, but as long as I follow her orders she doesn't say anything. I decide it'd be fun if I ignore her orders so I can talk to her. Maybe I can get information. My bosses at the agency are dissapointed I haven't figured out what she's making yet and stopped her.
~Scarlet's POV~
I see Amber putting a box in the wrong spot. It's supposed to go on the complete other side of the factory. I walk toward her. "Amber! What do you think you're doing with the boxes?" I ask.
"I thought they went here." She gestures innocently to where she put them.
"They most certainly do not. You've been working here for 2 weeks, you know where stuff goes by now."
"What even are the boxes for?"
"They hold parts that my most trusted minions who build stuff for me."
"How would one get there?"
"Follow orders and put stuff where it belongs. Please fix this and put the boxes in right spot this time," I request then walk away.
~Ember's POV~
I find it funny how they say she is the smartest villain, yet she is playing right into my hands unknowingly. She's not the worst villain morally speaking, but she keeps acting up so often that I must keep an eye on her.
~2 weeks of manipulation later~
Scarlet has decided to let me into her little club of construction minions since I've even so good at following her rules. There's nothing incriminating that I can tell yet.
After a few more weeks I realize she's trying to create brainwashing devices to have the world bend to her will. I report her to my bosses at the spy organization and remain undercover for the mean time.
~Scarlet's POV~
"There is a rat among us," I say to all my minions. I have ordered a meeting to figure out who is the mole. "Someone decided to tell some spy organization about my plans and they are trying to stop me. Whoever this spy is, must still be here undercover. If you come forward and reveal yourself, I will take sympathy upon you and your punishment will be tolerable. If you stay hidden and continue to rat us out, I will find you and you will know true pain."
The crowd of minions seems intimidated except for a few, the ones who have worked with me since the beginning. They know they're safe. Everyone else seems to doubt theirselves. I dimsiss them then try to make some form of data to find the culprit.
~Ember's POV~
How did she find out? I hand delivered the letter once I got out of work. That must mean someone from the agency is working with her and told her. I need to have a conversation in person with my bosses and tell them.
Someone sneaks up behind me and pokes my shoulder. I grab their wrist and bring them to the ground by reflex.
"Woah it's ok Amber. It's just me, Scarlet. I come in peace." Scarlet says from the ground.
"I'm so sorry, boss. Please forgive me," I release her wrist and help her get off the ground.
"It's ok, I'm sorry for trying to prank you. Where did you learn how to do that?"
"Self defense classes," I say which isn't the excact truth but it's also not a lie.
"Wow that's cool. You definitely can defend yourself."
"Thanks."
"Would you be willing to teach me? You can say no and stop any time you feel uncomfortable. If you feel like it'd mess with your ability to be a good minion that's cool if you don't want to."
I debate in my head while Scarlet talks. I feel like it'd a bad idea to train the person I have to watch how to defend theirself, but on the other hand I might be able to get more information easier.
"Alright boss, you've got yourself a trainer," I tell her.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Awesome! Thank you so much! When should we start?"
"Tonight after work for an hour, if that works for you. We could do it everyday after work, or every Friday after work."
"Um Friday works. I'm a weakling, remember? Fighting everyday would not help."
"Alright cool. Do you have a gym here?" I ask, planning where to teach.
"Yes actually. It's by the break room upstairs."
"Cool. Well then see you tonight boss." We shake hands and I get back to work.
~Scarlet's POV~
I walk into the gym and see Amber setting the punching bag up. She has her hair into a ponytail and is wearing workout gear.
"Hey. So how are you?" I ask her after I set my bag down.
"I'm doing pretty good. How about you? Excited to learn?"
"Yeah! Do I punch that bag and gain 50 strength?"
"Ha ha. Um no it unfortunately doesn't work like that. This just gets you used to punching objects that move." She explains to me.
"I can't even punch normal objects, how do you expect me to punch moving objects?"
"I'll hold it for you, just try not to hit me."
"I would never hit you. At least, not on purpose."
"Alright let me see your fist for how you would punch somebody."
"Why?" I question but do as I'm told.
"Typically when people first learn how to fight they may tend to punch wrong, I know I did."
"Am I doing anything wrong?" My thumb is inside my fingers.
"Yeah... so your thumb is supposed to be outside of your fingers."
I stick my thumb straight out like I'm hith-hiking. "Like this?"
"No. Try putting it onto your second finger, from that position."
"Now did I do it?"
She looks to her own hand and makes a fist, "yes! You got it!" she says.
"Yay! Sorry for making every single mistake," I laugh a little.
"That's alright. We learn better from mistakes than from succes."
"Wise words. Now what do I do?"
We go over to the punching bag. "I'm going to see how you punch."
"Alright?" I punch the bag and it swings around a lot.
"Good job for your first time! I'm going to teach you a few different types of punching, then you're going to do 3 sets, got it?"
"Yes ma'am," I say being completely stunned by her assertion. Amber usually keeps to herself and seems frightened at the rustle of a leaf, yet he is commanding me like a military officer.
After I do the sets she requested she also has me to do push-ups. Then we talk and drink water. "How is this going to help my self defense skills?" I ask her.
"Punching is important. Being strong is really important. You can't fight against an attacker if you can barely lift your own body weight. Punching helps in case they don't stay down on the ground you can take them in a fight."
"Wow Amber, you speak as if you've been in a fight. Have you?"
"Multiple."
"Really? But you're super sweet. How could you be in a fight?"
"Trouble just finds me wherever I go." She shrugs.
"How many have you won?"
"Almost all."
"How many have you lost?"
"1."
"What happened in that single battle? Why did you loose?"
"Alright that's it junior. We're done for today."
"Junior?"
"Er- boss, sorry boss. We're done you can go home whenever you're ready," she says then walks back to the punching bag.
"Wait! You know you can call me Scarlet, right? You're the boss in the gym."
"Sure, b- Scarlet. Have a nice night I'm going to stay and work out a bit longer."
"Alright. Don't overwork yourself. Have a nice weekend!"
"You too!" She replies then I leave and go home and take a shower.
☆Narrator☆
Scarlet and Ember are more casual with each other after a month of practicing. Ember doesn't even call Scarlet boss anymore. Scarlet still is searching for the mole that keeps spilling her secrets, completely unaware she is right under her nose. Ember tried telling her bosses that there's a traitor in the organization, but they ignored her and insisted she was wrong. They also lectured her about her inability to capture Scarlet. They give her a week to prove that Scarlet is a diabolical villain, or else they'll pull the plug and she will have to be on desk duty. Scarlet is about to find out who the mole is after an anymous tip.
~Ember's POV~
I get called into Scarlet's office which isn't that weird since I tend to hang out in there during lunch and we have nice conversations. This time is different though. I walk in and Scarlet is giving me the death stare. "Please have a seat. You're going to be here a while," she says to me.
"OK. Did I do something wrong?" I ask once I take a seat in front of her desk.
"Yes Ember. You did." Shit, I think.
"Don't you mean Amber?"
"No I meant what I said. Your name is Ember Jackson, right?"
"..."
"There's no hiding. I know the truth. I know you've been lying to me for months. I know that the entire time we've been hanging out you've been ratting me out to your bosses at the spy organization."
"Scarlet, I haven't told my bosses anything in months. I care about you. At first I thought of this as a job, but after all the time we've been hanging out, I realized you're such an interesting person and you are so kind. You managed to pull me out of my shell. You are so cool." I mean every single word I say.
"Sure. I pulled you out of your fake shell since you've been acting this entire time. Do you even care about me? Did any of this mean anything to you?"
"Of course it did! I got to meet you and see what a wonderful person you are."
"But you're scared of me?"
"What? No-" she acts like she is going to punch me and I flinch from reflex.
"Wow."
"That wasn't fair I flinch from everybody. I'm not scared of you."
"Well you should be. Since everyone thinks of me as a villain so much that they send a spy to make sure I stay in line, I might as well just become the best villain." She holds up a pink vial.
"What is that?"
"It should give me superpowers. Maybe we'll sell thousands of these potions so nobody will ever have to feel weak and powerless again. I think it's time you take a little nap while I chug this," she says then knocks me out.
In my dream I feel like I'm dead. Everything is perfect. Scarlet and I are holdings hands while our dog runs around the yard. The sky is perfect, as is the tempature. The sky has beautiful hues of blue, orange, pink, and yellow since the sun is going down. It's a little chilly but it feels nice because you can wrap yourself in a nice warm blanket. The world is peaceful there's no wars, famine, plague, or any other bad things to be found.
"I know what you dream of," Scarlet says when I wake up. The simple sound of her voice sends chills down my spine.
"I've seen it all. I know every thing detail," she leans in so close our noses are almost touching.
"And I swear, I'll do everything in my power to ensure you don't ever come close to making those dreams come true. If you're unhappy, I want you to know it's because of me."
Scarlet leaves the room dramatically and I notice the vile is empty. I assume she got telekinesis. I realize she tied me to the chair, but I break out easily since she didn't tie it that great. I have to find her and stop her. I steal a pink vile from the factory and chug it, deciding my best bet to defeat a supervillain, is to become a superhero. The world spins and I feel really dizzy. Once I get a hold of my surroundings I snap my fingers and finger gun my reflection. I notice that everything seems frozen in place, even birds in the sky. I snap again and everything is moving normally. Time freezing must be my power. That's awesome. I must find Scarlet and stop her.
I freeze time and run around the world searching for her. I find her making some sort of deal with a person in a lab coat.
~Scarlet's POV~
I'm in the middle of making a deal with a doctor about my potions when all of a sudden Amber- or should I say Ember appears.
"Stop! Don't make the deal. You're going to cause mass chaos and destruction," she lectures me.
"I'm going to give you two a moment," the doctor says then leaves.
"So? The world is already filled with chaos. Everyone can get superpowers and save theirselves and other people." I explain to Ember.
"This hasn't properly been tested. And when it does go into the market how are you going to handle the high demand? Everyone wants superpowers ever since they first hear about superheroes. How are you and your minions going to make over 7 billion viles?"
"We'll work it out. We tested it on some of the minions who volunteered. A few actually have copy pasting powers so they can just clone some viles. We're not sure the affects it would have on children, the elderly, and pregnant people, but we just won't sell to them yet."
"So you're just in it for the money?"
"I couldn't care less about the money. I just want to see you lose."
"You know that if you do this you can't go back, right?" She asks.
"I know. Isn't it amazing?"
"This is dangerous. There could be side affects that can kill people."
"You're being hypocritical."
"How so?"
"You took a vile and I know it. What's your superpower? Super speed? Teleportation? Being incredibly annoying?" I ask her.
"First of all, I'm not the annoying one you are. Secondly, I don't owe you any of that information. But if you must know, I can pause time whenever I want."
"Wow that's... actually really cool."
"What powers do you have?"
"I don't have to tell you. I don't owe you that. You lied to me for months, remember? I can't believe I trusted you. I made that mistake but I won't make it again." I turn my back on her and walk out into the rain.
She unfortunately follows. "Wait! I'm sorry. I never wanted to break your heart, or lie to your face, or hurt you. I was fine just seeing you as an intimidating boss for your minions, but now I know you're different. You are kind. If you see one of the minions having a rough time, you try to help them no matter what. That's just one reason that-"
I cut her off because I was reading her mind. "I love you," we say at the same time. "I guess you're not so different from your undercover role. The only time you're sure of yourself is when you're consciously doing spy stuff or teaching me how to fight. You also seem pretty sure of yourself right now confessing your love to me. I'm not entirely sure why you would love me since it seems counterproductive for your career, but I love you too. You were so willing to teach me new things even when you barely knew me."
"So what are we going to do?"
"Are you free tommorow night?"
"Yeah. I'd love to go out somewhere with you."
"Alright it'll be a surprise."
"I'm excited now!"
"Me too!" I say.
"Also what are we going to do about the viles?"
"I want to let the general public have access to them, but we could work out a compromise."
"How about we first let them get FDA approved, tested some more, then we can have a conversation about public access."
"Alright I can work with that."
☆Bonus stuff about junior☆
Scarlet and Ember have been dating happily for two months. The FDA still has yet to approve the potion that Scarlet made, but she's not too upset about that. She has an amazing girlfriend and an amazing team of minions who are super nice. When they first started dating Scarlet asked Ember about junior.
"Hey babe," Scarlet said.
"Yes dear?" Ember asked.
"Do you remember when I first started taking punching lessons from you?"
"I forgot about that! Oh my gosh that was so much fun."
"Yeah... but remember how you called me junior?"
"Oh. Yes I do."
"Who is junior?"
"Well remember how I lost a single battle? Junior was one of the casualties. He was a rookie that I was training even though I myself had barely leveled up in ranks before I trained him. Enemies spotted my team and the mission was a failure."
"I'm so sorry honey," Scarlet hugs Ember.
"It's alright it happened years ago. Let's focus on the positives right now, shall we? I have a super awesome girlfriend, we both have superpowers, we're thinking of adopting a dog, and we have each other. I think all of that is pretty great."
