8 ½ (1963) Directed by Federico Fellini

Plot Summary: Troubled Italian filmmaker Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) struggles with creative stasis as he attempts to get a new movie off the ground. Overwhelmed by his work and personal life, the director retreats into his thoughts, which often focus on his loves, both past and present, and frequently wander into fantastical territory. As he tries to sort out his many entanglements, romantic and otherwise, Anselmi finds his production becoming more and more autobiographical.

Amiably spiking all criticism through a gloomy scriptwriter mouthpiece, Fellini pulls a multitude of rabbits out of the showman's hat.

Astute beyond words.

Here is a piece of entertainment that will really make you sit up straight and think, a movie endowed with the challenge of a fascinating intellectual game.

It's Fellini's last black-and-white picture, and conceivably the most gorgeous and inventive thing he's ever made. This film is such an honest yet slightly surrealist look at the creative mind and how it clashes with those around it. It deals with love in a way that is cunning yet humane.
