Her Own Hero (Chapter 2)
She woke up the next morning after getting five hours of sleep. School started pretty early for middle school students, first period starting at seven forty five. making her wake up at six fifty. She showered and wore a light pink sweater that made her blonde, curly hair stand out. She brushed her hair, leaving it down since she hated putting her hair up because it made the top look really frizzy. She walked into the kitchen and saw her parents having some eggs and sausage. "You want some", asked her mom, "They're pretty great". Mel knew that her mom was insisting on giving her the rest of her breakfast, so she refused. "I'll just have some cereal, maybe some Cheerios", she began to grab the cereal from the pantry.
"Right, um, I have to stay even later for school today", said Mel pretty loudly, her house was one of the only place where she could be herself. "Why", asked her father, while chomping down on some sausage. "Coach wants us to practice for thirty minutes longer today, you know cuz the finals are coming up in two weeks". Her father gave her an approving look.
They all finished breakfast and headed to their destinations, the morning time was the only time Mel got to spend with her parents. This was especially her favorite time of the day because they got to drive her to school. Sure, it was only five minutes away, but she enjoyed those five minutes and talking to her parents about music and gossiping with them. Her dad was playing some pretty loud music in the car "AC/DC", she thought. "Can you turn it down", she asked as they arrived at the school. He did. "Bye, see you... tomorrow I guess", she said, but just as she was about to close the door, her dad cranked the music from five to a hundred. The music blasted and the few kids who had just gotten to school stared. She slammed the door "Stupid, frickin dad", she thought, looking down, trying to avoid eye contact with anyone.
She walked into the school and smirked, what her dad did was pretty funny. She walked to her locker and took out her algebra, science and writing notebook, her pencil bag and gym bag. Backpacks weren't allowed in classrooms, for some reason. So she took everything she needed for her first few periods.
She got to Algebra where she sat next to Jo, one of her best friends. Jo's name was actually Jordan, but ever since he had moved to this city five years ago, he told everyone to call him Jo. "Hello there", he said once he saw Mel sit on her chair. "Well hello Sir Jo", this was just something that came to her mind, so she said it. "What do you think we're doing today", he asked as she finally sat down. "I hope it's work sheets", she answered. Mel and Jo were smart kids, they had passed some tests the year prior and were allowed to take algebra the next for high school credits.
"Morning class", said Mrs. Lawrence. "Today is gonna be an easy day, we're doing work sheets". The whole class screamed in excitement, "Yay". Though Mel was happy, she thought that the whole class sounded like a bunch of nerds. It was a funny thought.
Mel and Jo liked working together in algebra, this would usually lead up to them finishing first and having the last ten minutes of class all to themselves. After finishing work, Mel pulled out her notebook and pencil and began to write. She had only ever let two people look at her story, Jo and Kathy. She began to write as Jo scooted his chair closer to hers, trying to see what she was writing.
"What's happening now", he asked. "Well, right now she's running away from the bullets", she whispered nit wanting anyone else to hear her. "But I'm thinking that then I'll make her boyfriend get killed trying to save her", she whispered with a small smile on her face. "Whoa, you want to kill Larry off", he asked while laughing a bit. Larry was a stupid guy and he never cared much for his girlfriend. "Yeah, It'll show how the character has changed, he's going to die a hero".
First period ended and Mel and Jo parted ways to go to their different classes. While on her way to the locker room, Mel spotted Kathy. Although she could only see her back, Mel immediately knew it was her. She could recognize the brown, frizzy hair and the bright, red gym bag. "Hello, are you excited for P.E", asked Mel as soon as she caught up to her friend. "Why", asked Kathy, but she didn't sound normal, she sounded bored. "We're doing kickball", responded Mel with excitement, but Kathy just looked sad. "What's going on", she asked her best friend as they almost arrived at the locker room. Kathy hesitated, then gave Mel an answer that made her regret even asking. "Mel, I'm moving ".
