Love, Divorce and Everything else
Chapter16:The Phone call

After Margaret and Jack had left, Ryan got back to the struggle of getting updates on Myra's condition, but the hospital wouldn't disclose anything to him. He couldn't bear the feeling of desperation and not knowing how she was doing. He couldn't rest, couldn't sit back and do nothing. He tried all possible resources and options to get any information about Myra's condition. In desperation, he fell to the ground and begged God to please save Myra. He said, 'I know I am not your favorite person, and I never pray either, but this woman, please spare her life. I love her very much. Please, God, save her, and I would never ask for anything else.' And he broke into tears. He waited for a few hours for any updates through his resources, and finally, his phone rang. He ran to pick up the phone. It was one of his influential friends who had certain contacts at the hospital. He told Ryan that Myra was critical earlier, but the doctors have been able to stabilize her condition. She is on medication right now, doctors are going to monitor her condition for 24 hours. Upon hearing the news, Ryan was really happy and thanked his friend. His friend also promised to keep him further updated on the progress. Ryan also insisted that his friend should ask the staff not to bother her parents with any bills. He would be taking care of them and said, 'Just make sure to tell them to get her the best treatment possible and not to worry about cost. If they need to bring specialist doctors, just do it. She is what matters.' Ryan's friend agreed to ask the hospital to forward all bills to him. After getting the update, Ryan took a sigh of relief, at least he knows how Myra was doing. Ryan then sat down in his living room, thinking and deciding what he needs to do next. He was sure that after warning Margaret and Jack, they wouldn't dare going near her or her family. He made a decision. He called his travel agent and asked him to book a one-way ticket for him to New York. The travel agent asked if a decision had been made on the return as he could book both right now. Ryan responded, 'I am undecided on whether I ever want to come back or not,' and shared his information. He finished the phone conversation by stating, 'I want to get out of town as early as possible.' He then started packing his belongings while waiting for updates from his travel agent, when suddenly his phone rang. Without checking who was calling, he picked up the phone and said, 'So is the ticket booked? When do I leave?' He heard a woman's voice asking, 'Leave? For where? Where are you planning to go?' Ryan: 'I am sorry, who is this?' Cynthia: 'This is Cynthia, Myra's mom. Can we talk?' Ryan: 'Sure, yes we can.' Cynthia: 'Firstly, I want to let you know Myra is a little better, not yet in her senses, but hopefully, if everything goes well, they will remove her from anesthesia.' Ryan: 'I am glad to hear that, Cynthia. Again, I am really sorry for everything, and you don't have to worry; I will be leaving shortly as you had asked.' Cynthia: 'Well, I don't want you to leave, well at least not yet. I found out that you redirected all bills to yourself and they wouldn't share the expenses with us anymore. Is that right?Ryan: Yes, Cynthia. Cynthia: Well, you didn't have to do that. We could have taken care of that, but thank you. Now, coming to the reason why I called you, well, I can say I will never forgive you for breaking my daughter's heart, but I can understand it must have been equally hard for you sharing that bitter truth with her. I know you meant well, and I apologize on my husband's behalf that he was so rude. At the same time, I am sorry my daughter did not give you a chance to explain. She is really fond of you, and I am sure you would understand that was the first thing that she was scared of and the last thing she was expecting. But I am sure it took a lot of courage to go against your own family. Ryan: I am sorry for everything. Trust me, I never wanted for Myra or her family to be hurt. I now realize it was never my business to agree to do this no matter what, whatever might have been the reason, I have taken care of margret and Jack. They will not bother any of you now. Cynthia: I agree, my daughter took a lot of time to pick up the pieces of life and started to move on, and then you show up. I don't even know what she might be going through now. She probably did not even get the time to process when the accident happened. But I want you to stay put because as much as I know, Margaret and Jack, they don't give up that easy, and we might need your help to tackle them as we are too old now to go through this all over again. Promise me, Ryan, you won't run away yet and you will be there for Myra and Emma. Ryan: I promise, Cynthia, if you feel so, I will be here for Myra and Emma.
