The cage
#WritcoStoryPrompt2
A wet leaf fell on her shoulder making her jump in fear. Startled, she shifted from her hiding place behind the bush.
She looked up. A grey monkey returned her gaze, then let out something that sounded like a hysterical laugh of a madman. The animal pulled on another leaf, then threw it in her direction but this time around, it missed.
- You little...! - she shouted.
She grabbed her green nut to toss it at her newly made enemy, but something stopped her. Four other monkeys jumped out of the tree on her left, and joined the leaf-thrower.
She knew wild monkeys shouldn't be underestimated. Even though they were being portrayed as cute in most documentaries on Animal Planet. In fact, they were vicious flesh-eaters that sometimes liked to snack on fruits. She shivered. It was relatively safe to insult one monkey, they usually wouldn't attack all alone. But five, five were definitely deadly.
For a brief moment, she calculated if it made any sense to hide behind the bush again. But, obviously, it didn't. As well as running, which would only encourage the herd to chase her.
She gasped. The monkeys swarmed around the leaf-thrower, occupied with watching her carefully. Was she good enough for their next meal? Or, was she a threat, which should be eliminated? Whichever one she appeared, she was going to be doomed.
She suddenly regretted escaping the camp. Yes, the hunters weren't touchy-feely but they at least wouldn't bite in her with a few inches long teeth. And they were feeding her decently, whilst all the food she could get on her own, was a nut which couldn't even be eaten yet. Not to mention the fact that she didn't have any weapons or a shelter. And that she was bound to get killed by something in the night. Jungles aren't resorts.
"Darn it..." she thought. "I guess this is it."
She felt tears of frustration welling up in her eyes. All she attempted at, was doing something good for the nature. And first she was abducted, then threatened to be killed, then got lost in the jungle, to finally get eaten alive. And she didn't achieve anything she wanted yet. Not even one from the elaborate list of things. She felt mad at herself for not following her father's advice, just because she wanted to feel independent. Look at her, held captive in the biggest prison on Earth, even though it didn't have bars.
- What are you doing?!
She heard a familiar voice, coming from behind. Somebody grabbed her hand, and pulled her back, to push her behind a door to a... cage?
Her own, safety-precaution cage for taking scientific pictures...?
- Jack? - she stuttered.
- Why in the world have you slept here? It's dangerous, Myka.
She froze. They didn't even notice she was gone? And, how did she make it back to the centre? It was pitch black when she was running away.
She started laughing.
- Stop, you're gonna make them come here! - he hissed, covering her mouth.
But she couldn't stop, and his hand made her sound exactly like a monkey, which caused her amusement to inflate.
- Myka... - Jack took her face in his hands. - I need you to be quiet.
She looked at him with her black eye and smiled with a scratch in the left corner of her mouth. He turned pale in a matter of seconds. - What happened to you...?
- I accidentally stumbled upon the hunters and they took me. Then, I ran away and slept in a bush.
- What?! Did anything bite you?
He began lustrating her, from head to toe.
When he realized she wasn't bitten, he relaxed. - Are you okay? - he asked, protectively wrapping his arms around her waist. She nodded. She was once again locked in a cage, but with her life miraculously prolonged, and her best friend around. It couldn't get much better than that.
