One Word Can Change A Life
#WritcoStoryPrompt123
Start your story about how a single word may bring a fight to an end.

Dead.

She was dead. There was no denying it. From the way her limp body had fallen, crashing through the thin window. From the way her corpse landed on top of the car below. From the little shards of glass falling down with her.

From the fear in her eyes, staring deep into my soul as she left us. She was dead, and it was all my fault.

Authorites were called soon after the incident. I stood there frozen, unsure of what to do.

'Should I jump with her?' I thought to myself, staring blankly at the broken window. The window she had just fallen through after I pushed her in a heat of rage. Now, there was no rage. Only silence, and soon sirens blared down the street.

"You should get out of here while you still have the chance."

The devil on my shoulder persisted, attempting to drag me out but ultimately failing. No. No, I shouldn't take the fall for this. It was an accident, right? We were in an argument and I pushed her out of anger. That was it.

"But would the cops believe that?"

There weren't any cameras in the room. No one to my knowledge had seen me do it. I could go. Quickly. Before the police arrived. I sat down on the couch. I could run away. That was the best option. That was the only option left.

I went for the elevator, calmly pressing the bottom floor, as to not run into them. Alas, I couldn't run any longer. I heard the footsteps. I bet they heard the elevator but I calmed my nerves before I could freak out. The elevator dinged, signaling that I had made it to the bottom floor. As expected, they were there too.

"Excuse me sir, do you have a moment?"

I glance up, swallowing the lump in my throat as they continued.

"There was a woman. On the thirteenth floor. We were wondering what floor you came from."

"The thirteenth floor."

I replied calmly, almost unphased.

"Do you happen to know anything?"

"No." I answer. "I need to get to work."

"That women just flew out of the window. From the looks of it, she was pushed as her back was against the window. You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, do you?"

"No."

I sound sincere enough to the officer I guess because he lets me go. As soon as I leave the building, I head straight for my car. Some people had seen me but they don't know anything.

As I start to drive away, the police report.

"There's no one here."

"What do you mean there's no one there?"

"I mean, the place is empty. There's a few pictures. The women with a man.. Dark hair, brown eyes. There looks to be a scuffle. She was pushed. Was there anyone who came down?"

"Yes. Yes there was."
