The beast
#WritcoStoryPrompt30
For a timeless moment, he was suspended within the confines of his car. Then gravity took over with a force that sent the vehicle hurtling down the face of the ravine.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." His broken apology flew down with the blood spewing from his lips...
Thud ! Ravi had jumped out of the car's side window..
He could see Moti's face still hopeful from the rear window of the car falling.Eyes drooped a little, before car crashed and burst into angry flames. The evening air had turned hot, slapping across his face harshly. The sun was beginning to set,it too looked dissapointed with him, drowning his faith in the emerging darkness.Their questions, disappointment did not pierce his soul as much as those pitiful eyes of Moti did.
Moti the dog, came on the same day, as Rashmi had came into his life. Moti was his only dowry that Rashmi had brought from her home.Even before Rashmi and Ravi could decide their respective sides of bed or closet.Moti had confirmed his place near their feets on their duvet by laying his furry body on it and closing his eyes in an stubborn manner, as if demanding that this matter was non negotiable. Moti gradually made a special place in his heart. He didn't leave him even when Rashmi left.He wouldn't have left him now too.Moments before the vehicle tumbled. Moti had nuzzled him with his nose. Wagged his tail, to buoy his hope. Placed his warm paws on his thighs as if he placed his trust in him, to not lose hope, to not give up. That he was still with him.He would always be with him.
"I know mate, we have survived so much...We will survive this too" he had said then.
He could still feel the place where his dog had placed his paws. He could feel their weight embedded on his skin.Moti who had accepted him with his flaws. Not like this world, who only wanted to see the beauty not the beast.
"Moti...Moti.. I m sorry.. so sorry mate.. my friend " his anguished cries could be heard around the hills for some time.
His tears had blurred his vision but his instinct to survive made him walk the road. He wanted to reach the city before it was total darkness.
Trees stared like accusing strangers. The walk seemed the weariest of his life not because of the rough hilly terrain road but because of the heaviness of his chest, even with all the emptiness of his heart.
After sometime he thought about, how running behind Moti during their morning walks, would spoil his mood, while his dog was off chasing some wayward squirrel.
"Easy boy... Easy" he would chid his dog and forcefully guide him to the route, he wanted to walk. Strangely he never would have walked the path someone else laid in front of him. He would rather choose his own.
"Grrr.. Grrr.. " Ravi turned around jumping, the sound of his dog growling had felt so real. His mind was playing games. That day too Moti had refused to settle. His growling made his migraine worse. His dog felt restless whole night and continued to bark after God knows what.
"Why do you have to chew everything ?" Ravi had seethed after seeing the state of his room.
Today the same Moti had chewed down his stuck seatbelt. His dog had looked at him quizzical, his eyes demanding why he had tethered himself. You see that.. his dog seemed to say. No one feels happy tied with a strap... wait I will release you, seconds before the dog tore the strap open with his sharp canines.
And he had made the same dog sat quietly in the side seat so as to balance out their weights to gain some time to avoid crashing. Just at the last moment he had jumped out sacrificing his dog for his life. It wasn't as if he was sacrificing some human being. Who would inquire after a dog ? His life mattered more afterall he was human, he thought trying to wipe the spewed blood only to smear it all over his face.
