Doomed To Burn Chapter 15
15| Sydney and Beth: Pushing Buttons

Sydney's intution was right. The car that Beth stole broke down about ten miles near Mount Washington. In the distance, there was a cliff called Frankenstein cliff. Beth pulled over and parked it in a patch of grass. Beth got out. Sydney didn't. Beth knocked on the window. Sydney opened the door and put both feet on the ground. Before she stood, She took something out of her pocket and held it out to Beth. It was a black key fob. "You know what this is?"

"Key finder. So what?" Beth replied.

"It's a rape alarm. I push this button and 500 decibels come out and anybody in the area would hear it. Best part? It's modded so if I click it three times it will contact the nearest police department about a suspected rape in the area." "Bullshit," Beth said flatly.

Amber clicked the keyfob twice. Instead of an alarm, a robotic female voice came out of it: Click again to admit report of rape... Click again to... The voice repeated five more times before beeping twice. "Dont worry... " Sydney continued, "The cops aren't coming. Got this as a present from an ex. He's one of those paranoid techy types. He's irrational as fuck but I kept this."

Beth stared at Sydney for a good minute. High above, near the cliff, you could hear and see an eagle cawing.
"You play an interesting game..." Beth said.
"No game. Last resort. I got family in Massachusetts. All I gotta do is deal with you until I get there."

They saw a Gas Station in the distance. Sydney remembered the money in Ronnies bag. When Beth was waiting in the car as she was burying him, She also threw the bag in the grave, But not the money. She opened her black purse and counted the money. $12 in total. So much for the money, she needed to charge her phone.

Electronics are always overpriced at Gas stations. Then she stopped and thought Wait, Did Beth still have her phone? Best not to ask right now. "Get food and some cigarettes," Beth said and gave her $10 as she waited outside. Sydney had never entered an American Gas station before. But it didn't look different from the ones she was used to growing up in Canada: Beer section, those gross hot dog grills she hated, extra-large soft drink cups, and every impulse snack you could think of. She grabbed a bag of Combos, and an Arizona Iced tea. And saw a wall charger and cable. She barely had enough.

As she waited in line, she looked over at the newspaper stand. She grabbed a copy of the New Hampshire Union Leader.
She paid, walked over, and walked over to Beth and shoved the paper on her so hard that some advertisements fell out."The hell is this?!"
Beth looked at the headlines of one of the front page articles:

Series of arsons in North Country
Police suspect link

Beth took the newspaper and threw the newspaper in the trashcan beside her. "Pssh. They got nothing. Besides, all the evidence is burned down."
" I dont remember that house you trapped us in, being completely burned.
" Whatever...Hey... where're my cigarettes and my food?" Syndey shoved the cigarettes and the change on her as well. "Get you."
"Don't push it..."
"Don't let ME push it..."

Beth didn't say anything and walked into the store. As Sydney waited she saw from across the street a gaggle of turkeys in front of some trees. She thought about Robbie and his skull getting melted. The thought made her cringe so much she shook a little.

"The fucks wrong with you?" Beth asked as she took a cigarette out of the pack and lit it with a lighter she also bought inside.

"Nothing. It's fucking cold out...."
Cars passed on the road in front of them in the distance. "....So what now?"

"We get another car."
"I dont think that's a good idea..."
"How you think we're gonna get there?
" Walk? There's a Dunkins...we can use the Wifi.. and see how far it takes...Can't be that far.....besides... I need to check my phone.."
"Ok but if you..."
"Do anything stupid you'll kill me...? Stop being so predictable girl.

Beth didn't say anything and starting walking.

Sydney walked behind her and said under her breath

"The sociopathic bitch is out of her mind, but she needs to follow to see how far it is, so Sydney followed."
