Supriya's Wings

“Supriya, check the list again and see if there is anything else you would need.” Mom said.
“I think we have packed everything, Mom”
“I am just saying. It is always better to cross-check.”
I went through the list again. I will be off to college tomorrow. This would be my first experience living away from home. Although I am home, I am starting to miss it already. This disturbing feeling of leaving my family behind, my sole support system, is gripping me. There is a world outside this place that I want to experience but I don’t want to leave either.
“Mom, where is my first-aid kit?”
“I told you that I left it in the drawer of your study table. Go fetch it.” I heard her from the kitchen.
I found it in the exact location. Neatly packed, all the necessary things were there. Oh! How will I manage without mom? Everything that I needed would always be ready since mom took care of it all.
I made some space in the suitcase to fit the first-aid box and ran down the list of items again. All done.
The day went by in the blink of an eye. I couldn’t cajole myself to sleep.

As the day broke out in different colours, I coaxed myself out of bed early to somehow get ready, both mentally and emotionally.

My father and I were ready to leave. My mom tried her best to fight her tears that were on the brink of her eyes. She was trying her best to be brave enough to let me go.
It was time to leave and I didn’t look back. I was afraid if I did, I might never be able to leave.

My father and I carried the luggage through the busy coaches and settled on our berth. The journey was 16 hours long. A plethora of possibilities running through my mind about how college life would turn out for me? In what ways will my life change? Will I ever figure out my true destination? I guess I will have to wait and see.

I couldn’t still bat an eye. I was the first girl who had a chance to move out of her hometown for further studies. There were many advisors, ranging from genuine to warnings.
“Wow, you are going to make us very proud!”
“I hope you have a bright future and figure out a path of your own.”
“You should never make friends with boys. Remember you are going to college for studies, not friendships.”
“You have a reputation to maintain.”
“Follow in the steps of your ancestors. You should be careful about what you do with your time.”
It was a long list and each pricked in their own right. My father and I would talk randomly every now and then. The journey was smooth.
After the formalities were done, I was assigned a hostel room. Before my father left me at the hostel gate, he said - “ Remember what your mother told you - You are never alone, we will always be with you.”
He hugged me and added, “I am giving you wings, make sure you fly high on your own terms.”
