A Moment
#WritcoStoryPrompt103

The day I arrived to the hospital, my heart raced with a mix of fear and excitement. I had waited weeks for the day to arrive and I was finally going to meet my younger brother, who I had never known.

My parents had adopted him shortly before I arrived and his presence was unfamiliar in our home. But as I walked into the hospital, I felt a strange sense of connection, like I had already known him my entire life. I stepped closer to the room he was in, tears of joy streaming down my face.

Unfortunately, my tears were short-lived. As I entered the room, I saw the heartbreaking sight of my brother lying in a crib, hooked up to numerous beeping machines. I remember the smell of antiseptic and the sound of the machines overshadowing everything else.

The doctors explained that my brother had a debilitating neurological disorder. Because of his illness, he was unable to move or communicate with us, and would likely need full-time care for the rest of his life. It was an unbearable scene for a family to endure and I knew in that moment that my heart had been broken.

I spent the next few weeks living in the hospital with my brother and learning how to administer the complicated treatments he needed. I was exhausted and heartsick, but I saw my brother’s bravery in the face of his illness and knew that I needed to be strong. I had to be strong for my brother, my parents and myself.

Throughout this experience, I began to understand how little control we have over certain aspects of life. That, no matter how hard we try, some events are simply out of our hands. It was heartbreaking to accept this fact but it also gave me a feeling of strength, resilience and understanding.

When my brother finally left the hospital, we celebrated our miraculous homecoming. But underneath it all, I still had a newfound sense of heartache that I would never be able to shake. Even though I was sad, the experience left me wiser, not only about the fragility of life but about the importance of cherishing each moment with loved ones. I will never forget the lessons I learned or the strength it took to make it through that time.
