The Silence Of Summer Nights
Summer's here, so it's natural to write about it, right? A short poem, a story, a song, anyone can find something to say about this season. This one will be about summer nights.
Cliché I know, there are so many people out there that write, wrote or will write their thoughts about summer nights. And that's fine, you're not forced to read this if you're going to roll your eyes as soon as you read the title or at least the first few lines. Go on your merry way. Now that I've said it, let's continue.
Where was I? Oh right, summer nights! Yeah, why would I write about them, what could I possibly say that would make them more special? Nothing I guess. I'm not even trying to make it seem more special. This is just me putting my thoughts on paper, well not exactly paper but you get the picture.
Truthfully, there's nothing new to be said about summer nights that we haven't already heard or read. Clear black sky covered in shiny little spots called stars. See, nothing unusual there. But still, it got me thinking...
What about the atmosphere when night falls and everything around us just stills? It seems like time just stops and so does life. Silence could be heard, except when you live in a neighbourhood where there are those who just love making you listen to their music and shouting, because you and other neighbours absolutely can't live without it. Excluding those moments, there are those that don't seem typical for a big city where nightlife is in full swing, especially in summer.
These summer nights are my favorite. When everyone goes to sleep, when music stops, a few cars could be heard in the distance, but barely. When even animals appreciate those rare moments without any kind of sound. No noise. Nothing. Just slightly dry and humid air, because the wind is lazy. Summer black sky littered in little diamond like stars that we could barely spot from down here.
It's almost surreal, the silence. Eerie if you aren't used to it. Your window is wide open, curtains pushed aside so that you can feel a little breeze traveling around, exhausted by the hot sun that shone all day. You're lying on your bed, still wide awake, waiting patiently for the perfect time to fall asleep when the air becomes slightly cooler than it was a few hours ago. You have your earphones in, or a book, or you just stare out the window, your mind somewhere else or just blank.
Those kind of summer nights are so rare in a city that never sleeps. It's that rarity in itself that makes them special in their own way. It's that time of night when you can relax, close your eyes and hear your thoughts without anything disturbing them from the outside. When you can smell the air, humid but without any particular smell to it. Also, you don't feel sticky and covered in sweat, which is a huge relief! Who even likes being sweaty? Ugh.
To conclude, there's nothing new you learned about summer nights from this story. Like I said before, it wasn't my intention to make it so. What I wanted to point out is the rarity of SILENT summer nights, how precious they are and how we only just now learn to appreciate them more. Well, at least us who aren't exactly big fans of noise.
'Til next time.
