Eveline started and sank to the floor, sobbing all the more.

"If you loved me only but a bit, you wouldn't look at Theodore, or talk about him in such tender manners!" The Count's voice shook the whole room.

"Now, get up." He said as he took hold of her clothes and set her upright. Eveline wept loudly as he roughly handled her.

He brutishly pulled her to the window, and pointed to her beloved.

"You see your lover?" he snarled. "Do you see him?"

"Y-yes...y-yes..." Eveline replied in a shaky, distressed voice.

"It's the last time you'll ever see him. You better start saying your goodbyes." The Count left her and took hold of a chain holding the cage Theodore was in.
