Jean-Baptiste Lully (born Giovanni Battista Lulli; Florence, 28 November 1632 – Paris, 22 March 1687) was an Italian naturalized French composer, dancer and musician.
Lully exerted considerable influence on the development of French music;
many musicians, up until the 18th century, would refer to his work.
On 8 January 1687 while he was following the performance of the Te Deum, which he had written ten years earlier, he seriously injured himself, hitting his foot with the heavy metal stick struck on the floor to mark time (it was an instrument commonly used at the time, given that the figure of the "conductor" did not yet exist).
The wound then, unfortunately, became infected and turned into gangrene;
to try to save him, the doctors proposed amputating his leg, but Lully refused.
This choice proved fatal.

Lully esercitò una considerevole influenza sullo sviluppo della musica francese; molti musicisti, sino al XVIII secolo, faranno riferimento alla sua opera.
L'8 gennaio 1687 mentre stava seguendo l'esecuzione del Te Deum, da lui scritto dieci anni prima, si ferì gravemente, colpendosi un piede con il pesante bastone di metallo battuto sul pavimento per segnare il tempo (si trattava di uno strumento comunemente utilizzato all'epoca, dato che non esisteva ancora la figura del "Direttore d'orchestra").
La ferita poi, purtroppo si infettò e si trasformò in gangrena; per tentare di salvarlo, i medici proposero l'amputazione della gamba, ma Lully rifiutò.
Questa scelta si rivelò fatale.
