Not For The Fainthearted
#WritcoStoryPrompt41
The mirror loomed over them as they traversed the hallways of the abandoned mansion. It was rumoured that no one came out alive from it...

After travelling for weeks, Kira, Ori and Vala reached the abandoned palace. This is the first proper shelter they found since they left home. The rain hasn't stopped for three days. They could use some rest beneath the roof. The folk they met on the road warned them about this palace.

"Whatever you do, don't spend the night at the palace." said the old couple. "Only the Devil knows what's in there. Nobody has come out of it alive."

Ori laughed when he recalled the couple's words. They had motivated him more than enough to spend the night there. He studied magic under various sages but the most he enjoyed was creating his own spells. He wanted to test him on whatever he found at this mansion.

Kira stepped in front of the gate. She leaned on the heavy hammer that she was carrying and examined the gate. People mistook her as weakling because of her fat stature. She had never known the limits of her strength.

"Shall we enter?" Kira asked Vala and Ori.

Vala stood at her spot in a trance like state. She is old but what she lacks in strength she compensates with her observation. She had booby trapped several palaces and mansions. She can sneak in and out of any fortress undetected. After assessing everything she nodded.

Kira lifted the hammer and began to swing it. One blow would have reduced the whole gate to scrap. Vala stopped the swing and gently pushed open the gate.

They all heard a sound of an animal rushing towards the gate from inside. It began to bark loudly. Ori readied himself to cast a spell, Vala went into a heightened trance and Kira was ready to strike whatever was rushing towards the gate. To their surprise it was nothing but a dograt. Something must have chased it out. Vala and Kira ignored it but Ori picked it up and began to pet it. He cared for animals more than he cared for humans. The dograt also took to him gently. They walked through the gates.

The entrance to the palace was covered with a lot of shrubs and weeds. It became quite a task to remove them. Ori cast a fire spell and burnt the leaves and twigs that covered the entrance. Vala did not like that. She loved plants more than anything.

The three entered the palace. It was dark inside and they couldn't see anything.
“Light a lamp.” said Kira to Ori.
Ori raised his hand and cast a spell. A lamp appeared on top of them. They all let out a shriek in unison and they huddled together. The whole place was littered with people sleeping on the floor. The sleeping folks seemed indifferent to the visitors and their shrieks.

“What is this place?” Kira asked the others.
“There must be some truth in all the things we heard on our way here. We should leave this place immediately.” Vala said.
The three turned around but couldn’t find the door through which they entered. The dograt wriggled itself from Ori’s grip and began to run. Ori began to chase it impulsively. Vala and Kira followed reluctantly. The mirror loomed over them as they traversed the hallways of the abandoned palace. It was rumoured that no one came out alive from it and they were living that rumour.

“Stop!” Vala cried. “I can hear some noises.”
Kira and Ori stopped and trained their ears.
“What is it? I cannot hear anything.” said Ori.
“I hear voices of people crying.” Vala said. She began to walk in the direction from where the voices came. Now Ori and Kira could hear the voices too. It seemed to be coming from a far off distance. People were sobbing uncontrollably.

At last they came to the room from which the voices came from. There was a huge door without any lock. Ori stretched his arm and back and began to cast several spells that attacked the door with fire, frost and lightning. It did not help. Next, Kira took her hammer and struck a strong blow but it had no impact on the door. She rained a few blows with rage but they did not help. Finally, Vala studied the door and realised that it was a complex piece of puzzle. With the help of Kira and Ori she moved several pieces around and the door started to open slowly. The three of them backed up a bit and prepared themselves to fight if anything coming out of that door tried to attack them.

Once the door was open several glass like men and women rushed out of that door and ran in all directions. They did not mind the trio that helped open the door. A minute later they heard voices shouting “This way. This way.” The glass humans rushed in the direction of the voices. The trio also followed them. They reached the main hall which they entered through. The glass apparitions entered the body of the humans lying on the floor and animated them to life.

Vala, Ori and Kira were stunned to see this.
