Best Friend
#HappyFriendshipDay #WritcoStoryPrompt54
Your best friend in the world calls you and tells you a secret that changes your friendship forever. Write a story in the conversation and the aftermath.

Her smile lifted me up when times were hard. She understood me in a way no one ever had, and I had known her since forever, for she was a family friend and was always over at our house. Despite the thirteen year age gap, Samantha was my best friend and we did everything together.
We kept nothing from each other, at least that's what I had thought until I received a shocking phone call.

Her breath on the other end of the line was heavy and irregular, her voice was barely a whisper. I could hear sirens in the distance and immediately panic overtook me.
"I was run over, I need to tell you," she whispered.
I urged her to tell me her whereabouts for I was not about to lose my best friend, although she seemed to have one foot in the grave from the tone of her voice.

"I'm your mother," she stated weakly. I screamed in disbelief as the line went dead. I thought the injuries were causing her to hallucinate. I rushed to hospital only to find her laying on a bed with no pulse, as white as a ghost, with several broken limbs.

I was still regarding her statement as confusion of the moment and was mourning her as my best friend, practically my sister, when the hospital came with some documents for me to sign, one of which stated that Samantha Gray was the mother of Bella Rose. Time stood still as I took everything in. I had gained and lost the parent I had been searching for all my life, in an hour.

I knew I was adopted, but everyone had told me my parents were unknown.

The funeral was two days later. It was still odd to address Samantha as a mother in my prayers, but it was also oddly comforting to know that despite her young age, she had never abandoned me.
