The Twisted Oak
Alone on top of the hill in the back yard there was a twisted oak tree
It lived there for many many years
It had a family there
They lived in a house a little ways down the hill
Little Tommy was his favorite
He would come out to play
He would coming running toward the old twisted oak and jump on the rubber tire tied to a branch
There he would swing
Tommy would push off and swing and as high as he could and let out a little giggle and swing back again
He did this all day long
The twisted oak loved Tommy’s visits
And loved him very much
He watched Tommy grow and grow just like a weed
Then one day Tommy didn’t come out to play
Then another day passed and another and another
The twisted oak was worried and felt all alone
Tommy had grown up and was too big for the swing under the twisted oak
Then one day Tommy came walking up the hill
The twisted oak saw him coming and almost didn’t recognize him
Tommy was carrying something in his hand
He came up to the twisted oak and sat down under his branches and leaned against his trunk
And opened up a book
The twisted oak was so touched and comforted by Tommy’s warmth on his trunk
Sap began to flow down his trunk
Tommy came to visit with a book everyday for weeks
The twisted oak enjoyed Tommy’s visits so very much
Then there came a day he didn’t see Tommy again at all
For a long time … months … years
The twisted oak cried and mourned the loss of Tommy
Then one day he saw Tommy come up the hill to visit
But he looked different. He walked very slow. His hair was grey. He had wrinkles.
He put his hand on the twisted oak that had aged too.
Tommy sat there for quite awhile under the twisted oak reflecting on days gone by of his youth under the twisted oak
Till finally he walked away for the last time
The twisted oak just knew that was the last time he would see Tommy again
He knew he would know loneliness for years to come and would weep and know solitude as his only friend
Than the day came
The twisted oak saw
Several people coming up the hill dressed in black
Two of them were carrying a long box
When they got to the twisted oak they put the long box on the ground
The two men who carried the box started digging a hole in the ground
It hit the twisted oak what was happening
Sap pored down his trunk
Oh how he seeped
He knew Tommy was dead
They laid him down into the ground
The group gathered in black … gathered round and said a beautiful prayer
Then they walked down the hill and were gone
The twisted oak was now alone with Tommy
He realized Tommy would always be with him
Tommy would grow with him in the ground
Then one day a little boy came walking up the hill
He came up to the twisted oak tree and hopped on to the tire swing
He pushed off and swinged and giggled
Just like Tommy used to do
The little boy looked like Tommy
When the little boy got off the swing and stood standing there
It hit the twisted oak tree
This must be Tommy’s grandsom
Oh how wonderful
Oh how much joy filled the twisted oak
The little boy boy walked down the hill towards the house and was gone
The next day he was back and the next and the next
The twisted oak wept sap of joy
For he had a peice of Tommy with him
He was no longer alone
The little Tommy brought him joy
He was at peace
