Her Own Hero (Chapter 10)
"How was the game", asked Kathy.

"We lost because I didn't make a lay up", answered Mel calmly, she
was feeling better about it.

"You still got second place though", suggested Kathy.

"I honestly just want to forget it, especially since tomorrow is our big day", said Mel. There was a moment of silence.

"Well, I'll let you rest up, don't want to pressure you too much", finally replied Kathy.

"Whatever, goodnight".

"Night".

Mel hung up. She put on her pajama pants and some school shirt. She turned off the lights and turned layed on her bed, the same thing she always did. Except this time, she actually slept.

The next school day went by fast, really fast. Mel, Kathy and Jo met at the cafeteria right after school. They wanted to take a look at the stage before they had to perform. "Why do you think schools have stages in the cafeteria, it's so frickin weird", commented Jo. "I don't know, but let's just plan how we're gonna set up", replied Mel.

At the end, they decided that they would place three stools at the front of the stage, right next to each other. Kathy would sit on the stool on the right, Mel on the left one and Jo in the middle. "Ok, I'll go tell the principle, you guys can go home to get ready", insisted Kathy. Mel and Jo agreed, grabbed their bags, and walked out of the building. "So, you have your outfit ready", asked Jo. "Yep, you", she asked. "Yep". They walked out of the building in silence. "My brother's here", said Jo as he waved to Mel. She waved back as she saw him step into the blue van that was his older brother's.

Mel got home and changed as fast as she could, wanting to have enough to have a nice meal without rushing too much. She opened her closet and grabbed her clothes. She put on a black, buttoned shirt and jeans. Then walked into her parent's room and snatched one of her dad's red ties. "Oh frick", she said out loud when she noticed she didn't know how to tie a tie.

After watching three YouTube videos, she finally got the hang of it. She went to the kitchen amd noticed there weren't any leftovers in the fridge. Not knowing how to actually cook or use the oven, she pulled ou a bowl and some Cheerios. She ate quietly, then she heard a honking noise. Kathy.

"Hello", said Kathy cheerfully, she was wearing the same thing as Kathy, except her jeans weren't ripped, and she was wearing white track shoes. Kathy never liked exposing any skin.

"Hi", answered Mel quietly. Kathy's mom waved at the back seat of the car where Mel was sitting.

"Are you girls excited", asked Kathy's mom.

"I'm just happy my parents aren't coming", said Mel in relief, she knew her parents would embarrass her, either by cheering louder than anyone else, or by asking random people how they thought she did.

Kathy and Mel talked the whole way to the school, they talked about the game, about school and about Kathy's upcoming moving away party. Then, they were at the school.

They walked into the dark cafeteria, where they found Jo sitting at a table in the front with his mom and brother. They greeted each other and sat down. "Hello, and welcome to Harrison Middle School's talent show", said the school principal into a microphone. "We are so glad to have so many students pa-", Mel ignored the rest of his speech until she heard him say, "First off we have Rylie Melendez". She heard people cheering and clapping all all around her, then, a short black haired girl walked up to the stage, violin in her right hand. She stepped up to the microphone and played her heart out, when it was over, everyone clapped.

More kids went, some sang, some played an instrument, some danced, one kid even did stand up comedy. "Next up, we have Katherine Willows, Mel Green and Jordan Smith". Mel laughed at how white their names sounded.

They walked up to the stage, carrying their stools and placing them in the front of the stage. Kathy quickly ran off the stage and grabbed her guitar. They sat in their seats, in front of more than fifty people. Then Kathy played the first chords. Mel breathed in deeply, opened her mouth, and sang.
