Magdalene knew not how or why this nearness that Fate thre them in one place for just a night changed the perceptions of both the characters and it's surprising how Magdalene a stanch stubborn character who has never given any room for such feelings as Love in all her life .She had vowed to remain so a confirmed spinster but now this unforeseen incidents in her life is having a bearing on her strong will.
It was nearing midnight and Raji was strapped with bandages and due to the stress and the aftermath of administering medicines had drifted off in to a sound sleep . Magdalene tucked her sheets in and made way to the reception where plenty of reclining chairs were arranged and Fritz sat at one end and Magdalene at the other end .
Fritz began to share about his life as they needed to pass the time as both could nt sleep though they had suggested the idea to each other.He dramatically but sadly recalled his life when as a boy had many painful experiences with a father who was addiction to drinking and died a premature death leaving behind a gullible Mother and a baby brother.He was just in High School and he had taken an oath that he d never see any tears come from his mother s eyes any more and also will never donanything against her wishes.He took this oath after they came back from the funeral to do the other rites to his mother before all his kith and kin.As a matter of fact these relatives were mocking his father and his wasteful living even at the burial ground before they had finished the burying ceremony. Especially his uncles who had made very cutting remarks and cynically even prophesied that the sons will walk in the steps of his father indirectly insinuating that the sons will eventually become drunkards and cause the same result for their wives.
This hurt him beyond measure like a knife driven in to his heart and as a young boy and he could never forget that day so he started working out from day one .He was exceptionally good in sports and hence through merit and scholarship completed Degree course, while playing for the College and then went on to represent the State and that 's how he got his first posting at this school - a direct recruitment by the State. He showed the so called relatives who had mocked his father that he had wonby his merit and hard work for none of them came forward to giving a helping hand.
He concluded sitting back on the chair in a leisurely fashion," So you see here am I in my 32 nd year and have narrated my sixteen year travel backwards and now I think it's your turn to recap your life to me won't you ?"he pleaded.
Magdalene was at first reluctant but she didn't know why or what came over her but began. and Fritz was mesmerized in her sharing because it was tinged with so much sadness that he thought his life had been so much better.A feeling of pity sympathy empathy all flowed in him at one time and hecaas drowned .Time had stood still for him and two hearts began sharing and listening mutual as if they had been Twin sides of the heart .
Magdalene had been born of parents united in love and had come from different caste and state so she was the apple of her father s eye. Her parents brought up in love and discipline but tragedy had a way to walk in to the lives of these three people and in an accident she lost both her parents .She left to the mercy of the Convent in which she had been studying and being a dreamer girl one can say all her life went like a dream.Since she had no relatives she studied Music and singing was her major in college.She excelled in playing the Piano and applied for a post and was recruited for her skills .She had joined the Management twenty years ago and became good friends with Raji who was ten years older than her but looked upon her as a younger sibling.
what was most striking is Magdalene who thought could never tell many things about her life was just rattling off one by one to Fritz who was taking in all as if he was a record player.
She told him about her father a few close to heart things like the native home in the countryside, the cemetery in which her father and mother were buried near her old home which she visited onceca year and how her mother had never so much scolded her but loved her in a quiet way unlike her father who was more dramatic and exuberant.She concluded that she had desired nothing more than to keep doing her job as a singing teacher for that was her only passion.
It was nearing five o'clock and Magdalene had reclined her head for a few minutes slanting her head towards the soft portion of the cushions and was fast asleep .
Fritz simply sat opposite her observing her serene face in the dim night light of the reception.It was nearing 7 o'clock when people started their daily routines and the hospital wards began to pulsate with action as a new day is born just as every home other places of work begin their day .
Magdalene woke up and found a white sheet covering her and in the warmth of it she assumed she had fallen asleep.Feeling a abashedly shy for sleeping in the chair itself she opened her eyes looking for Fritz but found him no where .she folded the sheet and the night' duty nurse picked up the sheet saying ",Madam where is that sir?, he had borrowed this sheet for you ,so please do inform him I have taken it back as my shift is over so need to hand over charges"Magdalene shook her head feeling a queer sense of tingling in her heart thinking about the kind ness of Fritz.
Magdalene went to the rest room freshened herself up and when she came back there was Fritz with hit steaming tea in his hands and smilingly wished her ,"Good morning"!
Magdalene accepted the cup and entered the room of Raji and she was just writing out a letter applying Medical leave and Magdalene wrote a letter of casual leave for two days to be with Raji in the hospital and Fritz was going to school with these letters and it's now that Fritz gave his mobile number and got hers too .This is the beginning of a love untainted, unimaginable ,incerdible by all standards and on that roller coaster was going to be these two characters...lets us wait to see how the plot of their life story unfurls ....?!
