You can still do good
Hannah woke up this morning feeling fed up with her boss. She did not sleep well because just last night she had a fight with her daughter again, who came home late. It sucks for her that she has to leave the house to tolerate someone she does not like.
"Good morning, dear", her husband says as she walks out of the room that he did not sleep in.
She ignores him, grabs her bag from the table and walks out of the house.
In the bus, she sits in the handicapped section, opposite of a teenage student, also sitting in the handicapped section.
An old man walks into the bus. Most people in the bus look at her to stand up but she sits. She's angry and frustrated, it shows in her eyes. The teenager stands up and lets the old man sit.
Next to Hannah is a young man, probably in his late 20s.
"You could have stood up for him", he says to Hannah.
"He found a seat didn't he? Plus, I'm having a shitty life and no time to be nice" she replies snarkly.
"It doesn't matter what you've gone through, you still can't treat people badly", he says
"Easy for you to say. You're still a child. You look like you're in your prime. You don't have a ring on so I guess you're not married. I have a daughter that rolls her eyes at my rules, a husband that agitates me and a boss I wish would burn in hell" she replies.
He exhales.
"I am married, legally. My wife is a drug addict who I recently found out have been giving drugs to our 2 year old son. I plan to divorce her. I missed days off work due to these family issues and other personal ones, so I got fired. I'm very close to being evicted from my apartment" he says, with the eyes of Hannah, the old man and the teenage girl on him.
He looks at Hannah, making eye contact.
"We may not be the same, we may not all be able to deal with problems but no matter what you go through, you can still help people. You can still do right by them. I believe things will get better. I have to so I could make it better. I have a son to live for" he says, ending with a smile as he looks away from her.
Hannah stands from her seat, giving it to the teenage girl.
