Her: Part 6
(Her: Parts 1-5 posted on my profile!)

I stayed awake for the rest of that night. Even when my dad came home and She left, I was too scared to close my eyes, much less go to sleep. I lay in my bed wide awake as the hours ticked by slower than molasses in the wintertime. The next morning, around six o'clock, I decided to get up and call Cal. I couldn't wait any longer. I had to tell someone my experience the night before, I had to tell someone about Her. I picked up my phone to call Cal, but suddenly I doubted he would believe me. I hesitated, wondering if this could be his last straw. If this would finally convince him that I was insane. Was it worth it? Was it worth possibly losing my best friend for this? I thought about it for a moment, but in the end I reasoned that if I didn't get help soon, if I didn't tell anyone about Her, She could and would do even more evil than She had already done. If I didn't tell anyone, if I was the only one who knew, She could never be stopped. I hit the call button on Cal's contact, and my phone dialed his number and began ringing. I took a deep breath.

"Hello?" Cal said. I sighed. I didn't want to do this.

"Hey Cal," I said cautiously.

"What's up? Is something wrong?" I smiled. He could tell even through the static of the phone that I was distressed.

"Cal," I said, closing my eyes, "I have to tell you something."

"What is it?" he asked. I could hear the worry in his tone.

"I know you're going to think I'm insane, but I promise you this happened, Cal. Please believe me. Please," I said, my voice beginning to quiver.

"Bree what's wrong? What happened?" Cal asked again. I took another deep breath.

"She's a monster, Cal," I whispered. There was silence on the other end of the line.

"What do you mean?" Cal asked slowly.

"Last night, my dad called and told me he was going to be from work," I continued, still whispering, "I was fine with it, until he told me She was coming over to wait for him. At first I was mad, but I told myself it would be fine, She wouldn't bother me. A few hours later I heard the front door open, but no footsteps. Usually She wears heels that clack when She walks, but this time I didn't hear anything. I thought She might be trying to steal something or snoop around in my dad's things, so I decided to go downstairs and investigate."

I paused here, hesitating, trying to find words that would somehow convince Cal to believe me. I could hear him breathing through the phone, listening intently. I knew he would try to believe, that he wanted to believe, but I was the one who had to make him believe.

"I tiptoed down the stairs, and when I got to the bottom, I found all the lights in the house had been turned off. I hadn't done that. I searched for a light switch and started hearing this strange, gnawing sound. I ignored it at first, but when I finally turned on the lights, I saw what was making it. It was Her, Cal. I know you're probably going to think I'm crazy, I know you're not going to believe me, but I swear on my own life, Cal, that what I'm about to say is true. She's a monster. A shapeshifter I think. She, or It, was crouched in the middle of the rug. She was hideous. Naked, and looked almost reptilian. Her skin was scaly and Her eyes, Cal. Her eyes looked like two of those crystal balls you see in the movie. They were cloudy and were popping out of their sockets! I screamed and tried to run, but She pounced on top of me and started scratching me with Her fingernails, Cal! If you come over you can see, my face is scratched and bruised. She told me that if I told anyone about Her She would basically kill me. I wasn't going to tell you because I was scared, I still am scared, but I had to tell someone. I threw Her off of me and ran up to my room, locking Her out, and after that I didn't hear anything. She tried to follow me, but I was too quick. Cal, I called the cops. I called the cops and they came, but She beat me to the door and the officer listened to what She said. She lied. She told him I had had a nightmare about my mom dying and had fallen down the stairs on my way to tell Her and the cop believed Her! It was like She... It was sort of like in Star Wars, how the Jedi use mind control on the Storm Troopers. The cop believed Her and just left, and I was stuck for the rest of the night with Her! He didn't help me!"

"Wait," Cal interrupted, "when She answered the door, She was still... A monster?"

"No, She had changed back. I know I sound crazy, Cal! I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, but it's true. You have to believe me, I need help. I ran back up the stairs to my room and was up all night. Cal, I think She can control people with Her mind. I think She killed my mom. I need help, Cal, please believe me."

By then I was out of breath. Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to the silence coming from the other end of the line. Cal didn't reply for a minute or two.

"B, I..." he finally said, hesitating. "I believe you, and I will try to help you, but... I don't know. Are you sure? Are you one-hundred and two percent positive about what you saw? Are you sure it was Her?"

"Yes," I replied, tears rolling down my cheeks, relieved that he said he believed me, "that same feeling I have whenever She's around was so strong. I have no doubt it was Her."

Again, Cal doesn't respond immediately.

"Ok," he said. "What do I need to do?"

I let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank you so much, Cal," I said, smiling through my tears. I could have kissed him in that moment. "I don't know what to do. If the cops can't stop Her, I don't know who can."

"We need evidence," Cal replied, still sounding hesitant. "How can we..."

He stopped mid sentence.

"Cal?" I asked. At first, I thought the signal had cut out, then I heard Cal's voice coming through the phone.

"B, I think there's someone in my house," he whispered. I froze.

"What do you mean? Is it your parents?" I asked hopefully, hoping that it was.

"No, my parents are out for the day. It's their anniversary," he replied, still whispering. My heart began to pound.

"Did you hear something? How do you know there's someone in the house?" I asked, my hands beginning to tremble.

"No I just have this weird feeling...wait."

The line disconnected. I stared at Cal's contact for a moment in horror. It couldn't... Could it be...

I ran, throwing my bedroom door open and sprinting down the stairs. My dad was in the living room and looked up as I charged into the kitchen, searching frantically for my car keys.

"Bree, what the..."

I was out the door before he could finish. I ran out into the driveway, slamming the front door behind me. Her warning played over and over again in my head:

"Tell anyone about this and I'll turn your life into a living hell."

What was a better way to do that than taking away my best friend. I hit the gas, sending my car flying down the street. My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. I prayed to God, my lips moving silently, that I would not be too late.
